My Favorite Movies

  akathetoad's Rating My Rating
1
Pitch Black 2000,  R)
Pitch Black
Surprisingly fresh writing makes a low budget scifi film stand out. If even Vin Deisel appered to be a decent actor in this you know the writing and directing wee superb. Unlike it's sequal "Chronicles of Riddick', Vin's charecter is completly compelling and attractive in Pitch Black and all the supporting roles are just as delightful. Radha Mitchell in particular was fantastic.
2
Beetlejuice 1988,  PG)
Beetlejuice
Tim Burton's best I think. Michael Keaton somehow made a rotting corpse seem hot.
3
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
4
Jurassic Park 1993,  PG-13)
Jurassic Park
My favorite of Crichton's books was adapted so well for the big screen. While the book would have alienated the younger readers due to violence, the movie was family oriented enough that all ages could enjoy it, while not sacrificing anything from the original concept. I maintain this is the greatest movie made yet so far: Brilliant score, Beautiful cinematography, cutting edge effects for it's day and it didn't alienate any audience.
5
Aliens 1986,  R)
Aliens
One of the few instances where a sequal will surpass the original. Aliens is exciting and funny and frightening and dramatic all at once.
6
Sleepy Hollow 1999,  R)
Sleepy Hollow
It's like a scary bedtime story. All at once beatiful and terrifying. What Burton and Depp do best.
7
Chocolat 2000,  PG-13)
8
The Frighteners 1996,  R)
The Frighteners
The film that made me fall in love with Peter Jackson. A dark comedy, not to be confused for a horror. Michael J Fox is as excellent in this (his last live action movie before retiring) as he was in his classics. This is literally one of the funniest and most quotable movies I've ever seen. "Dog's running away with m'face"
9
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie 1990,  PG)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie
My love and obsession for this film never seems to dwindle. Despite the awkward costumes (and I think they did QUITE well considering) and the PG rating, TMNT had a depth and darkness that attracted me even as a young child and I still appriciate today.
10
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Beautiful score, stunning cinematography, excellent characters. This movie met every hope I had for it. Depp was utterly luscious, hilarious and heroic while still being the villainous pirate rogue he was.
11
Die Hard 1988,  R)
12
Serenity 2005,  PG-13)
Serenity
Wonderful dialogue and extremely likable charecters make for an unexpectedly wonderful SciFi film.
13
Batman Returns 1992,  PG-13)
Batman Returns
While it wasn't overall as good a movie as the first Batman, it's still my favorite. Michelle Pfeiffer was the most luscious Catwoman imaginable.
14
The Witches of Eastwick 1987,  R)
The Witches of Eastwick
Phenomenal acting and a bewitching tale such as this are hard to surpass.
15
District B13 (Banlieue 13) 2004,  R)
District B13 (Banlieue 13)
While the plot isn't rocket science, I'm a sucker for a good buddy movie, and in this Banlieue 13 delivers in bounds. Not to mention some exceptional stunts (Le Parkour) by the talented David Belle and some impressive martial arts by Cyrill Rafielli. Fun, but defiently not deep.
16
Hellboy 2004,  PG-13)
Hellboy
Fun, funny, dark and exciting. I'll admit I never read the comics but this seems one of the best adaptations of a comic to film I've seen. Ron Pearlman is a superb Hellboy.
17
TMNT 2007,  PG)
TMNT
The eagerly anticipated stand alone fourth turtles movie. The CG was breathtaking and the turtles were so delightfully true to charecter, although Michelangelo and Donatello didn't receive near enough screen time. My complaint with the film was the secondary plot that seemed neither to fit nor really add anything to the movie itself, with the flying monsters and the turtles stepping in at the last moment to save the world.
18
Batman 1989,  PG-13)
Batman
The original and still the best. Michael Keaton made the perfect Batman. Charming and funny but dark and troubled as well, and no one could have played a better Joker than Nicholson.
19
The Last Unicorn 1982,  G)
The Last Unicorn
Still holds the magic and wonder I adored as a child. As much as I love this rendition though I would very much like to see a live action adaptation of Peter S Beagle's beautiful book.
20
Ghostbusters 1984,  PG)
Ghostbusters
Classic and timeless. The performances never get stale nomatter how many times I've seen this.
21
Willow 1988,  PG)
Willow
Until the recent release of Lord of the Rings, this was one of the only truly good Fantasy movies availible. It still remains one of my favorites.
22
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi 1983,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
My favorite of the original trilogy.
23
Batman Beyond - Return of the Joker 2000,  PG-13)
24
What Lies Beneath 2000,  PG-13)
What Lies Beneath
Thrilling and unexpected and a beautiful ghost story. Pfieffer is, as always, phenomenal.
25
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 1977,  PG)
26
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 1980,  PG)
27
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
A perfectly excellent adaptation of the book. I could not have been more pleased.
28
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002,  PG-13)
29
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King 2003,  PG-13)
30
Desperate Measures 1998,  R)
Desperate Measures
An unpromoted gem. Michael Keaton shines in this action drama that hints at amusement in a surprisingly sexy film.
31
Bedknobs and Broomsticks 1971,  G)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
A heartwarming older movie with more than a little bit of magic. One of the Disney Classics.
32
The Dream Team 1989,  PG-13)
The Dream Team
This is one of my altime favorite comedies. Quotable one liners and loveable charecters make for a wonderful ride.
33
The Princess Bride 1987,  PG)
The Princess Bride
Beautiful and hilarious. All at once a classic in Fantasy and a borederline spoof, every bit as wonderful and enchanting as the book was.
34
AVP - Alien Vs. Predator 2004,  PG-13)
AVP - Alien Vs. Predator
A middleschool students wet dream, still somehow touches that part of us that enjoys seeing different genres paired up to do battle. Surprisingly pleasing.
35
The Lost Boys 1987,  R)
The Lost Boys
Clasic 80's "Horror", which comes across more dated than it might have intended, but still manages to be cool and funny. Includes both Coreys as all decent 80's movies should.
36
Evolution 2001,  PG-13)
37
Tank Girl 1995,  R)
Tank Girl
When you say B movie, Tank Girl comes first to mind. Low budget, insane script and storyline. As nutty as the comics they were derived from. But Lori Petty is an extremely likable Tank Girl and this is one of those movies you hate to love or love to hate.
38
Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 2
Alfred Molina gave a terrific performance as Dr. Octapus, and I loved how the film borederlined on the rediculously comic at times, but still managed to keep it's edge. Very true to the feel of the comics and the cartoons.
39
Spider-Man 2002,  PG-13)
40
Ghostbusters 2 1989,  PG)
41
Ladyhawke 1985,  PG-13)
Ladyhawke
An often overlooked fantasy adventure. Slow paced but wonderful all the same.
42
Mortal Kombat 1995,  PG-13)
Mortal Kombat
Awful and yet, still loveable. For anyone who played the game it's a trip down memory lane with fast paced fantastic techno music.
43
Back to the Future 1985,  PG)
Back to the Future
Classic and in my opinion the one well done time travel movie. Michael J Fox can do no wrong in this fun family adventure.
44
Back to the Future Part III 1990,  PG)
45
Back to the Future Part II 1989,  PG)
46
The Fast and the Furious 2001,  PG-13)
The Fast and the Furious
Not terrific acting, not a particularly inspired plot, but still somehow Fast and the Furious holds an appeal. Maybe it's just seeing good looking people driving hot cars. Fun and Sexy.
47
King Kong 2005,  PG-13)
King Kong
Beautiful and poignant and real. Jackson's take on the classic is heart wrenching. While not usually a fan of Jack Black I thought his performance was perfect and Naomi Watts was so warm and moving. Spectacular. Kong and the Island were so majestic and otherworldly. This is why Jackson is my favorite.
48
Masters of the Universe 1987,  PG)
Masters of the Universe
Fantastically horrible. He-Man! And the Masters of the Universe is one of the most fun and poorly made movies I've seen. Hate to love and love to hate.
