Broken Saints ,  Unrated)
Broken Saints
my favorite...thing. it's not a movie, it's not a comic, it's not a book. it's not a music cd. it's all thoose things and more. it's quite hard to describe other than it's a whole new genre of...'thing'. and it's brilliant. this has the most touching, non-religious yet spiritualy meaningful story in any format without being new age or preachy. it has the most fleshed out characters i've ever seen and the music will move you to tears. simply put, you all MUST WATCH THIS. it's going into mass DVD production in late july, but you can always watch the original 12 hour opus at www.brokensaints.com

What would you give to know the Truth?

Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies) 1988,  Unrated)
Hotaru no haka (Grave of the Fireflies)
easily the greatest animation ever produced by any country at any time. the greatest anti-war movie ever made (animated or otherwise) and so touching, tragic, and ultimatly heartbreaking that it could make a stone weeps bloody tears. the tragity increases when you learn how accurate this was at depitcting the average japanese childs experience with WWII, and you realize that this story probably happend over and over again accross the country of japan. bottom line: you WILL cry if you watch this, and you MUST watch this if you truly love animation or cinema in general.

Oldboy 2004,  R)
Oldboy
wow. this is easily going on my list of all time favorite movies. this was absolutly brillant, beyond compare. the premise, the plot, the cimematography, the performaces, the everything was completley and utterly perfect. WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!

Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) 2005,  R)
Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance)
the third and final film in the vengeance trilogy by director park chan-wook, this is, in some ways, the pinaccle of his work thus far. while my favorite remains oldboy, this is a very different take on the idea of revenge. that is, it's by both a woman's perspective, and a spectator's. it's not nearly a twisty as oldboy's mystery, nor is it an example of justified reveange on both sides, such as mr. vengeance, but rather a fable of how revenge is never for anyone but yourself, no matter what cause you think you are fighting for. a very nice tieup for the themes park chan wook wanted to explore, and despite it's brutality (although past films are easily moreso) park is truly protesting violence by portraying it in such a realistic fashon. please, do yourselves a huge favor and watch the entire revenge trilogy. it'll really make you think, and thinking is the best thing you could ever do.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) 2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
how did i go so long without knowing of chan wook park's existence? he pulls off another great movie about not knowing who to feel for. both sides generate extreme feeling of synpathy in the viewer, yet no ones actions are anything less than dispicable. this follows park's trend of both regvenge and ambiguous justifications. frankly, park asks the audience, "what would you do if this happend to you?" you understand it all, maybe you would even act the same. but on what side would you be on, and would you even know there were sides? it gives the movies a bit of social\human behavioural commentary. A fucking plus
6
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2002,  R)
Cidade de Deus (City of God)
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!! this movie is brilliant. absolutly, hands down THE BEST photograhy i have ever seen. truly genius. the flash-editiong to make the film seem more like a photo journal is terrific! hot damn, i can't say enough good things about this.
7
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai) 1954,  Unrated)
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no Samurai)
god, how did i go so long without rateing this movie. jesus, talk about the great cimematic epic of all time. this movie had everything one could want, and a hell of alot more. kurosawa's brain should have been cryogenicly froze so he could one day return and keep making great movies, saving us from the artistic drought hollywood seems to have been going through the last 4 or so years.
8
Rashômon (Rashomon) (In the Woods) 1951,  Unrated)
Rashômon (Rashomon) (In the Woods)
Probably my personal favorite Kurosawa film. The same story being told four times, from four different perspectives, showing that the truth can be a wildly different thing depending on ones point of view. this was really quite a feat to make durring the opressive art regulations of post-occupation McArthur-era japan, as it might suggest that perhaps there were two sides to the war, despite not really being about it. Supurb filmaking.
9
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 1998,  R)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
one of the most enduringly funny movies ever made. Depp and Del Toro shine like crazy in this crazy drug rampage.
10
The Seventh Seal ,  Unrated)
11
Suna no Onna (Woman in the Dunes) 1964,  Unrated)
Suna no Onna (Woman in the Dunes)
The greatest romance ever. the tale of two people stuck in a hole in the ground, and the fear of ever leaving. excellent. also see: the box man, a book by the same writter
12
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
The Big Lebowski
what can i say. one of the greatest comedies i've ever seen. it may not be obvious at first, but this is truly a gem. i've seen it at least 12 times, and it never loses it's funny.
13
Rushmore 1998,  R)
Rushmore
one of my all time favorites, despite some unfortunate parallels with my own life. it's use of music, visual style, and brilliant performances by the actors, namely bill murray, make it and all time classic. it also was the first real movie to show the murray was more talented then what most people thought before then.
14
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 1975,  R)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Awesome movie. hard to encapsulate in words just how much i love this movie. if hits my beliefs in virtues in so many ways; anti-establishmentism, loyalty in friendship, fighting to retain ones dignity, and useing humour no matter what the situation. classic
15
Dark City 1998,  R)
Dark City
Brilliant!!! absolutly brilliant....ish!!! i can't give this five stars because of personal disputes with the acting upon reflection. this could have been one of the most brilliant mainstream released sci-fi's of all time if not for it's actors over the top perfomances. the film is otherwise perfect save for soem minor editing blunders (or maybe just odd chioces). oh yeah, and jenifer connelly enters the room like a golden mist!
16
Reservoir Dogs 1992,  R)
Reservoir Dogs
Tarentino's first and best. this movie is resposible for starting the "mainstream indie" phase of the ninetys (something i wish would come back). it's also about the only time i ever enjoyed micheal madsen AT ALL. that fat fuck almost completely spoiled kill bill 2 and sin city for me. mr. blond is the only good role he has ever had. all he ever does is read a que card with a squinty expression and gain weight. don't beleive me? watch the HBO original 'the sender'.
17
Eraserhead 1977,  R)
Eraserhead
my new favorite freakout. jesus, this movie is goddamn repugnant, and hence i love it. i guess it's about a guy who can't cope with marrage and fatherhood, but it's so surreal that any interpetation could be correct. WATCH THIS ART!!!!!
18
The Hustler 1961,  Unrated)
The Hustler
a killer movie about a man losing everything, finding redemption, then having it snatched away. i perfect mid-1900's period piece and one of the first movies made in a genre i like to call "the futility of life" collection
19
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
Miyazaki is a masterful storyteller with a vivid and colorful imagination. This is the kind of thing kids should be raised on, not some pokemon crap. alas, the age of the epic kids movie is long past. never again will america produce another neverending story or last unicorn. harry poter is as good as it gets now, and that's total shit.
20
The Element of Crime 1984,  Unrated)
The Element of Crime
Easily the greatest detective story i've ever seen. surreal photography and hypnosis indused narrative guide you through a near apocaliptic setting, and while the plot itself becomes predictable, the movie never lost the most important part of any mystery: the intrigue. signature lars von trier pretentions abound, but never annoy
21
Voices of a Distant Star 2002,  Unrated)
Voices of a Distant Star
easily the best love story in anime form i've ever seen. possibly one of the most poeticly made short films ever. made me cry a bit. just absolutly gorgeous animation too. and to think this was made by only one guy on his computer. watch this, you'll be damn glad you did.
22
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) 1972,  R)
Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God)
a story about a boat, a few gold hungry spaniards, and a mutiny of monkies. sounds like a comedy, right? no, it's one of the best films in history, the tale of a doomed expedition in search of El Dorado, and how everyone slowly went batshit. Klus Kinski is the freakiest motherfucker in the stratospere.
23
The Atomic Cafe 1982,  Unrated)
The Atomic Cafe
declassification is an interesting thing. this film wasn't made, but rather just edited, splicing together old propaganda, declassified footage, old newsreels and miltary breifings to the grunts set to period approipriate music. it's disturbingly facinating how ignorant the us military was to the power they held with the spliting of the atom. i'll admit the perfect score comes from my personal facination and horror towards the nuclear bomb, but truly this was a remarkable beyond just my opinion. And for those who think it's just libral propagana, you might want to watch it anyway, because i think it's rather non-partisan myself, although it definatly anti-nuke. definatly a must watch for anyone with even a passing interest in the subject.
24
Bringing Out the Dead 1999,  R)
Bringing Out the Dead
probably my favorite scorsese film. (yeah, i know it's an odd choice) the sheer bleakness of it is so well done you feel like killing yourself, but not in a bad way. as long as your not addicted to "feel goo" movies, you'll like it.
25
Metropolis 1927,  PG-13)
Metropolis
really a great acheivment in film. seriosly, you'll think it's faked modern effects, but no, they really pulled that off with 1920's technology. it's also remarkable progressive for the time, and just plain out enjoyable to watch. some may think it drags dur to it being silent, but i think it was grand!
26
Fireworks (Hana-bi) 1997,  R)
Fireworks (Hana-bi)
one of the greatest movies ever made. two words: bang.................bang
27
Sonatine 1993,  R)
Sonatine
A-MAZ-ING!!! my all time favorite Beat Takeshi movie ever. every one should see this, and if you don't, i will track you down and slurp you guts though your intestines!! i can't beleive this database has no picture for it.
28
Ba wang bie ji (Farewell My Concubine) 1993,  R)
Ba wang bie ji (Farewell My Concubine)
not at all what anyone thinks it is. this is the gorgeously shot story of two men growing growing up from boys in a strict acting troupe, and living there lives as bejing opera performers during the japanese occupation, the natioanalist seizure, the cummunist revolution, the great leap forward, and the cultural revolution. it is at times a period peice, at times operatic perfomances, and always goddamned brilliant. the use of sepia tone early in the movie was a good one, because that really pleased my eyes. god, this may be a new chinese favorite for me, and i've been watching alot of chinese movies.
29
The American Astronaut 2001,  Unrated)
The American Astronaut
capitol B Brilliant!!!! take one part the forbidden zone, one part six-string samerai, half a part sifl and olly, and 18 parts pure awesome, put it in a space western setting with purposely low budget appearence (the interior of the main characters spaceship wall a studio apartment, complete with peeling wallpaper) and you got yourself a kick ass musical full of great music, cool characters, and the boy who actually saw a female breast. HIGHLY RECOMENDED, especialy if your in the mood for something unique.
30
Broken Flowers 2005,  R)
Broken Flowers
existentialism is not a movement. it is not a simple set of rules like a religion. that is the difference between a religion and a philosophy. they say everyones life has moments of existentalism, where they don't understand the things they can't control, but they try to puzzle it out, despite it's futility. i know it's true with me, quite aften, in fact. that is why i loved this movie.

with no real beggining and no real end, we follow no one in particular trying to find purpose where there isn't any. in the end, the mystery isn't solved, but the act of trying to figure it all out makes him realize things he never thought he would, if only in himself. that is the essence of this movie, and indeed, the essence of life in genral, for all of us.
31
My Dinner with André 1981,  PG)
My Dinner with André
a great exercise in purely dialog based film making. the camera never leaves the dinner table and rarely even makes a cut. minus half a star for ridiculous hippieism from Andre, otherwise a great film. WATCH IT!!!
32
Baraka 1993,  Unrated)
Baraka
as one who had already seen koyaanisqatsi, i really only expected more of the same. in a way, i was right, but i was right in such a good way. this may not the the first to think of the format, but it's the best of the bunch. some of the best film photography I've ever seen in any production. EVER!!! not one word is uttered, yet certain moments move you to tears. the director makes what may be commonplace seem deeply spiritual and moving. damn fine piece of work, earning itself my coveted WATCH IT NOW!!!!
33
Sherman's March 1986,  Unrated)
Sherman's March
i reviewed this before from the memory of watching it when i was 13 years old. upon seeing it again tonight i felt compelled to re-write this review. this is one of the most impressive documentaries i have ever seen. a morosely tragic and funny year in the life of a lovesick filmmaker attempting to document Union General Sherman's march through the south. instead, what we see is a man laid bare in a fruitless pursuit of love with women of the American south. We also explore elements of nuclear paranoia, isolationist and hippie living, matchmaking, southern rockers and finally a floundering, desperate attempt to couple with an old friend. what makes this film work is it's genuinely up front, no bullshit style, filmed far more like vacation video with narration than specially edited and polished. really a MUST WATCH
34
Withnail and I 1987,  R)
Withnail and I
funny, sad, uplifting, depressing. withnail and i is one of the greatest films ever committed to celluloid. Richard E Grant's performance deserved an Oscar. Bruce Robinson nailed it right out of the gate.
35
Space Is The Place 1974,  R)
Space Is The Place
Sun Ra and the intergalactic myth-science arkestra, an avant-garde progressive jazz band from the 70's made this wondrful little film. it's not exactly good, it's not exactly heavy hitting cinema, but it is a unique and entertaining movie worth a look no matter who you are. I SAY WATCH IT!!!
36
Network 1976,  R)
Network
damn good. that's all i can say. it deserves a better review than that from me, but all i can say right now is damn good.
