The Cooler 2003, R)
One of my all-time favourite films, I went back and rewatched this one again recently. I tend to have a soft spot for the characters played by William H. Macy. This movie was certainly no exception. During many scenes, I just wanted to reach through the screen and hug the poor guy! Excellent casting coupled with solid acting made this film feel extremely genuine to me. I value the element of realism considerably as it tends to draw me deeply into the story. I also loved, loved, loved the sense of nostalgia that blankets the entire plot. And, to be sure, I enjoyed the non-traditional, fucked-up love story. That's life! Not these nonsensical happily-ever-afters that Hollywood likes to cram down our throats. Bleh. This one starts out a little slow; but, believe me - it ends with a bang! Highly recommended! |

Interview with the Vampire 1994, R)
I've seen this film countless times; yet, I never grow tired of it. At last, someone brought a dramatic vampire flick to the big screen. Don't get me wrong, I revel in the blood-curdling, gory ones. But. This. Is truly a masterpiece. The film is so visually indulgent. There is dark eye candy at every turn. To sum it all up in one word - captivating! |

Dead and Breakfast 2004, R)
I cannot begin to tell you how much I adore this film! Put very simply, you have a horror-comedy-musical. Who on earth would have imagined such a crazy blend of elements? Lol. I was most pleased with the gore factor. It really kicks in during the latter half of the film. Lots of blood! Yum!! Unlike many films of this genre, the plot is fairly well devloped. And the characters are very individualistic. This is, by far, one of the best independent horror films I've seen. |

The Machinist 2003, R)
This is one of those films that totally captivated me. In fact, I had to watch it a second time to figure out exactly why. The combination of camera work and sound creates an incredibly effective, and very surreal, mood. It makes this story simply fascinating to watch. At times, you yourself feel almost as if you are suffering from sleep deprivation - just like the protagonist. Brilliant! |

Live Free or Die Hard 2007, PG-13)
I have to admit, I was a little worried when I noticed that this one was slapped with a PG-13 rating. But, much to my surprise, it did not disappoint! In fact, this turned out to be my favorite of the "Die Hard" series. The final action sequence was a thing of beauty. Over the top? Of course! But I loved every minute of it. What a terrific cast! Of course, Bruce Willis was essential to the film's success. I was quite impressed with Justin Long's performance as the nerdy hacker, Matt Farell. Kevin Smith was hilarious - such attitude! And last, but certainly not least, Timothy Olyphant as the evil villain, Thomas Gabriel. One word. Yum! |

Hedwig and the Angry Inch 2001, R)
If you want to see something that's completely different, I highly recommend this film! It is truly one of a kind. The movie is essentially a very theatrical rock opera. Pay careful attention to the lyrics of the musical numbers - they are hilarious! On top of that, you have these animations that appear periodically throughout the piece - sheer genius! This film went the extra mile, however. In addition to the fun elements, you have a very well developed protagonist along with a number of adult themes. The latter add considerable depth to the story. I can hardly believe that Mitchell packed so much oomph into a mere hour and a half! Way to go! |

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003, PG-13)
You know, I almost hate myself for loving a mainstream blockbuster film this much. Almost. Lol. I'm sure it has alot to do with my pirate fetish; but, yeah, I was definitely suckered in. This film was terrific all around. There's action. Adventure. Love. Amazing scenery. Skellies!! And, of course, the zany Jack Sparrow. Er. "Captain" Jack Sparrow. He's such a charming asshole. Heh. Ah, yes. I totally adored every minute of this film. I've seen it multiple times and it never lets me down. Two hooks up!! |

Black Snake Moan 2007, R)
Brilliantly unique! You certainly can't say that you've seen a film "like" this one before. The major characters in this movie are flawed - some to an almost debilitating extent. They were each captivating, in their own way. This film is tragic; yet, touching and cute, even funny at times! Christina Ricci's performance as the emotionally disturbed, sex-crazed Rae was most remarkable. Much to my surprise, even Justin Timberlake did a good job in his role as Ronnie. This movie was a lot more serious than I thought it would be, given the subject matter. But. It really worked! I was even pleased with the ending of this one - it felt like a good fit. Highly recommended! |

Pathology 2008, R)
Visually stunning! It is not very often that I'm impressed by the rawness of a film; but, I have to say, this one certainly did it for me. In a big way! Since this wasn't a horror movie, I really didn't expect it to deliver such gratuitous gore and sex. Yum. Overall, I felt that the general storyline was both unique and creative. Upon further analysis, I will admit that the plot of the film was somewhat predictable in places. In addition, the characters weren't all that well developed. But, to be sure, I didn't notice any of this while watching because I was so immersed in the darkly delicious imagery. By far, one of my favorite films of 2008! |
