A Clockwork Orange
A Clockwork Orange is a disturbing tale set in a dystopian future. The story follows Alex DeLarge and his gang of 'droogs' as they rape and murder in the name of a good time. However, his crimes catch up with him when Alex is sent to correctional centre where they use a wholly unconventional method to 'cure him'. Originally banned due to copycat murders, the film is very controversial and includes extreme violence and rape scenes. Perhaps the scariest thing about the film though, is that it is all too real...
In my opinion this is the greatest masterpiece in cinema and should be watched by every person on this planet.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot) 2002,  R)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Boksuneun naui geot)
The film follows Ryu, a deaf mute whose sister is very ill. Following a series of misfortunes he finds that he cannot afford a kidney transplant and therefore turns to kidnapping to raise the money.
The movie depicts man's desire for revenge and the retribution which it brings. There are many extremely violent and challenging scenes, but these are integral to the plot. The story targets the viewer's emotions and challenges your belief in humanity.
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
What a film! Absolutely amazing. The plot, characters, acting, cinematography - everything was so well done. The director did so well in conveying the film in line with Derek's views. At the start I found the White Supremacists very convincing and saw Derek as a stronger character, but as he went through prison I started to feel sorry for him and realised what terrible people the Neo-Fascists really are. The characters were so well developed, especially in the build up to the end of the film. I found the ending to the film incredibly overwhelming, especially as I already felt so sorry for Derek.
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
Miyazaki's finest film to date. I can assure you that even if you don't normally like anime this film will be one of the greatest you ever see. The artwork is spectacular, the story incredible and all this is achieved without CGI; just using convential methods which involves separately drawing and inking thousands of frames. Note: don't watch it in English, watch it in Japanese (with subs of course)
