The only true future Noir, the clothes are exagerated versions of those worn in the old B&Ws, there is a strong use of light and shadows and Deckard could well be a reincarnation of Marlow. No other "future Noir" I have seen can claim this.
On top of this there is the great plot which you can either take it as is or you can allow it to inspire you into thoughts on what it means to be human.
The film perfectly captures the atmosphere at every second; the fight scenes are not to be missed, whilst at the same time the love interest is completely believable.
This film is the perfect blend of many genres; period; romance; horror; martial arts.
The Anime version of Bladerunner? - it certainly has the same sci-fi-philosophical premise - cyborg cops & issues over what it means to be human but is addressed from a different perspective, instead of it reflecting the old film noirs, GITS, has a much more vibrant outlook and the action scenes are more intensive however as with Bladerunner there are still the reflective dialogues.
An extremely paranoid film, completely engrossing and the soundtrack is immense, perfectly capturing the mood at all points.
One of the best directorial debuts I have seen.
This is the film to which I fell in love with the Marx Brothers. Groucho has so many great lines (particularly the scathing ones) that he was my favorite from the start I have however become more appreciative of Harpo with every film I have seen since.
A wonderful combination of culture and ecological warning whilst retaining a great sense of humor throughout.
At first I was a bit lost as to why the animation style changed but I quickly stopped caring and just enjoyed the film
The perfect reboot to the Batman Franchise, you can see that Nolan has studied Batman Year One even if he hasn't kept the same plot. I can't wait for The Dark Knight, especially if he does the same with The Killing Joke as is being suggested.
I strongly believe people too easily dismiss Fritz the Cat as Cartoon porn, this is their loss as it is an incredible satire which pulls no punches.
It is unfortunate that it was let down by such a lowsy sequal.
It took me to the second watch to appreciate this film as it had been slated as it had been compared to Bladerunner; it may have some elements of Bladerunner in it but not the ones that I enjoy the most. Once I had overcome the initial dissapointment however I have been able to appreciate the film in it's own right and have also become a fan of the TV series which started it off.
I think I might have been the last person to see this; everyone was surprised I hadn't seen it as it was my "sort of film" this is usually a bad sign but when I did see it, I was knocked back. There are too many films these days without any imagination, you know where they are going and can predict the ending after the first 15mins. This is not one of those films. The first time I watched it I kept being surprised by what I was seeing and it took to the second watch to get my head round it. Every actor has there character pegged, who though Swayze was able to act?
This is a brilliant film and I saw it at my first film festival. I was dissapointed with the second section but all was forgiven with the 3rd. My favorite will remain the first section though, it is such a great story of loss with faultless direction.
FOr many years I thought no film could match this version of the batman, with so many memorable lines from the Joker, Nicholson is truely psychotic and with Keaton's everyman you can imagine yourself being Batman.
I made sure I read the book before seeing this and Linklater did the novel proud, possibly the most faithful adaptation I have seen (I haven't read LOTR) a few aspects we lost in the film including the full extent of Actor's paranoia but this would have been unfilmable without resorting to a horrific voiceover (think cinema release of Blade Runner).
I am yet to see Heor on a big screen but HOFD is visual beauty the colours are always perfectly composed and the movement is balletic. I think the bean dance will go down in cinematic history.
This film is broken into three sections of the narators life, youth, adolesence and adulthood. My favorite section and the one that is paid most attention to is Youth with a cheeky little boy discovering the cinema and starting a friendship with the projectionist. There is another part of the film that is incredibly moving though but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who is yet to watch it.
Tornatore has created another wonderful film about a boy coming of age, this boy is at the start of adolesence but retains a lot of the humour and interest the young boy in Cinema Paridiso has. The brilliant thing about this film is that it tells the story of the boys coming of age through the story of a woman who is ostracised from the village due to her beauty.
Incredibly passionate film with and outstanding soundtrack - The DVD has a isolated soundtrack option, I recommend everybody watches the film this way at least once.
As I was a psychology student I already new of this experiement which had to be fictionalised do to particiapant anonimity however the experiement was ended early due to ethical and safety reasons. In my opinion this just makes a really good thriller even scarier as something similar has occurred.
I was not dissapointed, this film has been correctly compated to Heat, it even starts off with the same premise, cops trying to take down armoured car robbers. However the similarity is seen in the face off of two big names, France's Depardieu & Auteil to Holywood's Pacino & DeNiro. However whilst in Heat one is deffinatly on the wrong side of the law, in 36 they are both cops eager to crack the case. Throughout the film I was thoroughily engrossed and sypathetic to one of the characters. This film prooves that France can do high powered films of the same calibre as Holwood without throwing away their integrety.
This film was poorly remade into City of Angels, in which process Hollywood created a popcorn romance out of cinematic poetry. The philospophy was dumbed down, the beauty was made common and garish and the character lost all individuality. Please watch this film as evidence why Hollywood is unable to do decent remakes.
I happened across this film by accident on channel 4 - went in not knowing what to expect and was immediately gripped, this is probably the most sensible portrayl of the end of the world. No expalination is given as far as I remeber just that everyone is preparing in their own way. A brilliant character study.
This is a brilliant film and one of the many that introduced me to dark humour from an early age. The story arc flows naturally to the extent that you almost know what's coming next. Some of the best humour though comes with the interruptions the dog makes which could be seen to be the cause for what follows.
