Bridget Jones's Diary 2001,  R)
Bridget Jones's Diary
Utterly hilarious adaptation of quite possibly the funniest novel I've ever read. The cast are perfect. The direction perfectly captures the humour of the source. It's a real pity they changed director for the sequel.
2
Blade Runner 1982,  R)
Blade Runner
Exquisite visuals, thought-provoking neo-noir sci-fi from my favourite director!
3
Doctor Zhivago 1965,  PG-13)
Doctor Zhivago
An exquisite tale of love, survival, family, community, and lost ideals.
4
Gone With the Wind 1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
Seems to be one of everyone's favourites. For me it's all about the delightful characters. Both Scarlett and Rhett are wonderful.
5
Chungking Express 1994,  PG-13)
Chungking Express
Nobody captures loneliness and the wish for romantic connection in a world where physically we seem so squashed-up together and yet so apart emotionally, the way Wong Kar Wei does in this and other films. Worth watching over and over. Also has a terrific score.
6
The Age of Innocence 1993,  PG)
The Age of Innocence
Magnificent drama of "emotional violence", wonderfully adapted from the masterful novel.
7
When Harry Met Sally 1989,  R)
When Harry Met Sally
For a long time this was my absolutely favourite romantic comedy. Witty, honest and touching.
8
Mughal E Azam 1960,  G)
9
L' Appartement (The Apartment) 1996,  R)
L' Appartement (The Apartment)
There really should be some kind of law against this type of perfection from a first-timer. There are scenes in this outstanding film that go beyond fine writing, fine acting, fine direction. An absolute gem.
