Across the Universe Across the Universe PG-13
If any band's musical footprint could sum up the human condition, it would be The Beatles. This film does an amazing job of showing the range of emotions in these songs by following a young couple through their journey of love and life. This is a modern day musical done right. It is engaging and romantic with beautiful cinematography. It does the music justice, and that's saying a lot from me, because I generally hate Beatles covers. The film does a great job of weaving a plot around The Beatle's lyrics. You get to watch a young couple take a journey through the most dynamic time of the 20th century and watch how the characters and their relationship is molded by the world around them. I felt almost as if The Beatles wrote these songs for this movie by the end of it. The casting is perfect, and I'm so glad they didn't go for really famous actors. It was so much more believable with fresh faces. And please, no more Moulin Rouge comparisons. I loathe that film.
Adaptation Adaptation R
This movie is a clever film about... well, it can't be summed up in a few sentences. The preview for the movie is absurd & I think that's either the sign of a great movie or a horrible movie. Luckily, in this case Adaptation is so ingenious and complex it defies a synopsis. This is a superb story written by screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman is one like Tarantino used to be, but he's got neuroses instead of attitude.
