The Phantom of the Opera
Enthralled by the "Phantom of the Opera"...sets and costumes are beautiful, and music is addictive.

Directed by Joel Schumacher. Starring Emmy Rossum (Christine), Gerard Butler (Phantom) & Patrick Wilson (Raoul). Theatrical adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage musical chronicles the relationship between a disfigured musical genius & a young soprano.

Moulin Rouge! 2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
Revived the movie musical genre. Must be seen at least twice to appreciate it all.

Drama/Romance/Musical, directed by Baz Luhrman. Starring NicoleKidman (Satine) & Ewan McGregor (Christian). A poet falls for a beautiful courtesan whom a jealous duke covets in this stylish musical, with music drawn from familiar 20th century sources.

Shakespeare in Love 1998,  R)
Shakespeare in Love
Great date movie, but it gives you a greater appreciation for Shakespeare's plays too.

When Will Shakespeare needs passionate inspiration to break a bad case of writer's block, a secret romance with a beautiful lady helps him write "Romeo & Juliet"; a funny behind-the-scenes look at the writing of the greatest love story ever told.

Army of Darkness
Hillarious! One of my all time favourites. Best watched with fellow "Deaddites" :)

Gothic-Horror Comedy, directed by Sam Raimi. Starring Bruce Campbell (Ash). A man is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., where he must battle an army of the dead and retrieve the Necronomicon so he can return home.

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)
A surprisingly complex plot. I notice something new everytime I watch this sci-fi jigsaw puzzle! Great performances for Pitt and Willis.

Sci-Fi/Thriller/Drama, directed by Terry Gilliam. Starring BradPitt (Jeffrey Goines), Bruce Willis (James Cole), & Madeleine Stowe (Kathryn Railly).

The Matrix
I have so much to say about this film...it's a masterpiece.

Cyberpunk film directed/written by Andy & Larry Wachowski. Starring Keanu Reeves,Laurence Fishburne & Carrie-Anne Moss. A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality & his role in the war against the controllers of it.

Minority Report
Sci-Fi/Thriller, directed by Steven Spielberg. Staring Tom Cruise. In the future, criminals are caught before the crimes they commit, but one of the officers in the special unit is accused of one such crime and sets out to prove his innocence.

What Dreams May Come
Surprising emotional depth.

Based on the novel by Richard Matheson (author of "Somewhere inTime"), "What Dreams May Come" uses many familiar metaphors & traditional representations of the afterlife, but also uses cutting-edge visual effects to create images never seen on film before.

Braveheart
A movie about strength of character, and protecting what you love. Loved the music too.

Epic. Starring, produced, and directed by Mel Gibson. A partly historical, partly mythological, story of William Wallace -- a Scottish rebel who leads an uprising to fight for his country's freedom from English rule around the end of the 13th century.

Gladiator
The only movie I've ever seen 3 times in the theatre. At the time I thought it was the most perfect film I had ever seen.

Epic, directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Russell Crowe (Maximus)& Joaquin Phoenix (Claudius). "The general who became a slave. The slave who became a gladiator. The gladiator who defied an empire."

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Yay for Johnny Depp! Great performance for Knightly and Bloom too. An instant classic.

Action/Adventure, starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, & Keira Knightley. Pirate Jack Sparrow sets out to save a governor's daughter from fellow pirates, with the hopes that it will give him the opportunity to regain the ship that was stolen from him.

The only version that's true to Shakespeare's play!

Adapted screenplay, directed by, and starring Kenneth Branagh.

A childhood favourite! (Um, it's still one of my favourites...)

Fantasy/Romantic Comedy, directed by Rob Reiner. Screenplay by William Goldman; based on his novel. Starring Robin Wright (Princess Buttercup) & Cary Elwes (Westley).

A modern fairy tale that reflects the violence & absurdities ofthe world; there are fist fights, sword fights, instruments of torture, poisonings, disfigurations, and death. The theme of the novel centers on the trials and tribulations of true love.

The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
One of my favourite films despite the macabre subject matter because it's a great psychological thriller. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is the charismatic, yet repulsive, cannibal/serial killer who profiles his former psychiatric patients to help FBI Angent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) catch a killer on the loose.

American Psycho
The identity of Patrick Bateman is merely a charismatic mask designed to help lure in his unsuspecting prey...

He resorts to obsessive-compulsive behaviour to hide the fact that he's falling apart as he gives into his desires.

Makes you wonder why society tends to trust beautiful people, since they are equally capable of unspeakable evil.

Sci-Fi Drama, directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring Haley Joel Osmet & Jude Law. In a future when starting a family is subject to strict governmental restrictions, most work is performed by robots, confronted with the idea of programming a robot to love.

James Cameron resurrects the stories of some of the victims of this famous tragedy by telling the story of the maiden voyage of the Titanic with the fictious characters of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet). It was my favourite movie for years, despite the criticism. I can't watch this film without crying...so what? Gonna make something of it? LOL

Philip K. Dick was a visionary. Brilliant book...an amazing film.

Cyberpunk film, directed by Ridley Scott; based on the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick. Starring Harrison Ford.

I absolutely love the way bioethics of eugenics were explored in this film. Brilliant.

State-of-the-art visual effects and a great story update this classic horror film. Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo shine in their serious roles, while Brendan Fraser provides comic relief. This movie will appeal to men and women, young and old alike.

The first Monty Python I ever saw as a kid, and it still keeps me laughing so hard that it hurts! So many llamas in the credits, but I don't recall seeing any in the film. ;)
