You thought you hated pan flute before? Just you wait.

Otherwise a pretty fun zombie movie. Note: I said fun, not quality.

Ignore the the title. It has nothing to do with Fulci's zombie film. That was a marketing ploy. What it does have though is ninja like zombies, eye gouging, hesterically bad acting, face peelings, hesterically bad dubbing, green slime and head detonations. Pretty fun time.

You really don't need to watch this movie. It's a good example of Italian splatter horror b-movies, but there are better ones. That said, it has its charms.

The film tells the story of a zombie outbreak on a Caribbean island, caused perhaps by meddling scientists or perhaps by... read more a Voodoo priest seeking vengeance. Could be either one. Everyone is killed. Fast-forward 20 years to find two groups exploring the island. One group of scientists stumbles upon the book of the dead (conveniently labeled in large block letters (in English): THE BOOK OF DEATH) and reads the magic words to open a door to hell, like children shouting "Bloody Mary" at the mirror, I guess. Well, you know the rest -- ninja zombies, gunfire, bad teeth, and self-sacrifice follow.

    A few more thoughts:

    * Not by Fulci, but definitely within the genre he started. The zombies are creepy, but the main focus are the gore shots. The shots don't have quite the lingering effect that we see in Zombi 2, but the film's "high points" are definitely the mutilations and deformations.
    * I discussed the nightmarish aspect of many Italian horror films with my class. While Zombi 2 has some significant plot holes, it does hold together somewhat. By comparison movies like The Beyond, Cemetary Man, and Zombie 4 operate more like dreams, leaping from moment to moment, sacrificing narrative continuity for effective horror. We're so accustomed to the Hollywood style that it becomes difficult to conceive of intentionally violating those rules.
    * The zombies were very inconsistent, but mostly they moved much faster than most Italian zombies do. Many were dressed like ninjas rather than like the conventional shamblers. The protagonists who changed maintained their faculties, which let them do things like taunt the victims or try to trick them. "Join us."
    * Apparently, being a zombie is a very slobbery experience. Nearly every closeup shot of a zombie featured a grotesque dribbling of colored ooze from their mouths.
    * Like Zombi 2, this film confuses or blends the conflicts between science and magic. At the beginning, the scientists blame the zombie priest for starting the outbreak. He insists that the door to hell he opened came after the zombie plague, and that he was merely seeking vengeance on the scientists who had started it. The scientists insist it was the open door to hell that caused the trouble.

Finally, just a piece of advice I've learned from a number of different horror movies of various stripes: don't read sacred words of summoning from ancient books aloud. Come on, people. You're asking for trouble.

People gave this movie a lot of flack because it is allegedly part of Lucio Fulci's "Zombie" Canon, I urge people to give this one another look, look at it for what is is, an awesome, action packed bloodfest zombie flick called "After Death", the "Zombie 4" is just marketing BS.

If you really liked Zombi 2, and were just dying to see another Italian low-budget island voodoo-zombie movie, than this is it. But I warn you, keep your expectations VERY low...

Fun, good-looking, brainless Italian zombie movie. Not the worst of its kind, certainly not the best.

Overall, there's the sense that nothing went right at any point during the shoot. I urge you all to rent it at the first conceivable opportunity. Full Review

Not the worst zombie movie I've ever seen, but it was close. Full Review
