Rob Lowe stars as the title character, a young hockey prodigy with a gift for scoring, but no such penchant for pugilism -- when the gloves drop, so does he.     I saw this sports romance movie on TV about a month ago, and I thought it was pretty good, especially with the two hot stars Lowe and Swayze, but it could've been better, less predictable, I mean.

    It's really 80s oriented and completely ridiculous half of the time, but there's a really good story within it as well.     Youngblood is a by-the-numbers sports story, of the "underdog youth makes good" variety. Within this framework, the actual sports change from film to film, and sometimes the stories are about a team rather than one individual, but the basic curve of excitement never changes. The ... read morenewcomer needs to excel because sports are his ticket out of a life of drudgery. The budding star has talent, but is missing some key ingredient which holds him back. After a few initial successes, he is thwarted by an evil entity. Sometimes the obstacle is a player on another team, other times an injury, sometimes the problem lies within himself. In the course of the film the youngster overcomes the problem, defeats the nemesis, gets the girl, and wins the big game in time for the credits to roll over the applause.

    In this case, Youngblood is a young American hockey player who sees the sport he loves as his only way out of a lifetime of farming or mill work. His older brother had the same dream, but an injury permanently took him out of the sport, and now the younger brother has been given a chance. He must overcome two obstacles: a thug on the other championship contender, and his own dislike of fighting. To make his challenge even tougher, he meets a girl (Cynthia Gibb) right after joining his first professional team, and she turns out to be the coach's only daughter, which doesn't please the coach.

    Well, we all know the formula, so the rest of the film is predictable, but I really enjoyed this film. I basically like this formula to begin with, and it helps when the film is about a sport you kinda enjoy and/or know something about. In the end, however, it is not the familiar story, but the unique execution that makes this kind of picture succeed or fail. In this case, the characters are all likeable, the hockey action is believable, and the film even managed a couple of serious themes. Best of all, the film is liberally sprinkled with humor. An easy watch.

    I always love watching the winter sport is ice-hockey on movies so in this film with young players of the team was a good deal.

    When you have a movie that deals primarly with hockey fights, it probably would've been a wise move to cast someone a little tougher than Rob Lowe. Lowe plays Dean Youngblood, a hotshot young hockey player who gets a tryout with a minor league team, The Hamilton Mustangs. After w... read moreinning a spot on the team, he learns that it takes more than fast skating and slapshots to make it in hockey. Patrick Swayze assumes the role of mentor, although his teachings are cut short when he is severly injured after a cheap shot during a game. It's here that the movie runs into its biggest problem...trying to make Rob Lowe tough. He goes through some Rocky-like training with his father and older brother in an effort to avenge Swayze. However, even after this training, it's obvious that Lowe has no idea how to throw a punch. So when the big fight comes, it's like watching Pee Wee Herman square off against Arnold Schwarzenegger. So that aspect of the movie fails miserably. Other than that though, it's a pretty solid movie. All of the actors know how to handle themselves on the ice, and are totally believable as hockey players. Ed Lauter is a standout as the hard as nails coach with a smart mouth, who also happens to be the father of Lowes love interest, played by the very cute Cynthia Gibb. So some good hockey, good characters, and a very welcome nude scene with Ms Gibb, and you've got yourself a tight little hockey picture. Just be sure to turn your suspension of disbelief up to the max when the movie asks you to accept Lowe as a brawler.

    Keanu Reeves in a role where he doesn't speak much, and has his face covered with a mask most of the movie...perfect role! Kind of a Bromance hockey movie between Swayze and Rob Lowe, including locker room scenes of the guys smacking each other in the ass with towels and skippin... read moreg around wearing jock straps, wacking each other (with sticks), and just general gay grab ass. (Peach and the chickies favorite part)

    Seriously though, it is actually a pretty good flick. Swayze teaches Rob Lowe how not to be such a scrawny wuss/pretty boy and stick up for himself against the league bully. Couple of twists and turns, and some decent hockey scenes. It's not Miracle or, Mystery, Alaska. But it is still pretty good.

    Great 80s hockey movie mixing hockey fights and a cheesy 80s love story, this movie is a definate 80s winner. Any movie portraying ex-ballet dancer turned acting heart-throb Patrick Swayze gets cheers from me.     Man, when I saw Rob Lowe in this movie he blowed my mind. He was great in this movie. It was a good movie.
