Billy Crudup stars as the ill-fated athlete who overcame physical obstacles to win an NCAA championship and compete in the 1972 Munich Olympics. The film follows Prefontaine from his youth in Oregon where, despite one leg being longer than the other, he shows himself to be a talented runner. Later, while attending the University of Oregon, Prefontaine meets and forms a strong bond with his coach, Bill Bowerman (Donald Sutherland), the man who would later go on to found the Nike shoe corporation. College is also where Prefontaine falls for classmate Mary Marckx (Monica Potter), beginning a romance that lasts until his untimely death in a 1974 automobile accident. The other film about Steve Prefontaine was 1997's Prefontaine which starred Jared Leto in the titular role. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Without Limits is an average sports biopic that features strong performances from Billy Crudup and Donald Sutherland. Not as powerful or captivating as it should have been, but the performances from the leads hold it up. Donald Sutherland is an under appreciated actor in my book.... read more He is one of my favorites and never ceases to amaze me with his performances. It was also cool to see Matthew Lillard in a small role. He too is very under appreciated, although he may have brought some of that upon himself with the Scooby-Doo movies.

Of course I have bias, postively towards this movie considering that I am a runner. He is a running legend most definitely.
  • February 21, 2011
I love running, and I think this movie has been done well. But for my family & friends that don't run, this movie held absolutely no interest. They quickly got bored, unfortunately.

There is a tendency to release movies in pairs. Forget about the other Steve Prefontaine movie. This is the "Prestige" of the Pre bio-pics

During my 26 years of running the 800 meters, my Track Coach always called me the female Prefontaine! This movie is the true story of the best and gifted Long Distance Runner ever which will truly inspire you in everyday life!

ends in the most horrible way with pre dying in his prime of running but is a very good and inspiring life story :)

Steve Prefontaine is my favorite American Athlete! This movie does a great job at telling his story and teaching the lessons he left behind.

This Movie weas amazing. Although at times crud with words, Pre shows us and tells us thing that will make you go, "Wow" and when you see him run your mouth will drop the floor. As a XC runner I was glued to the screen as Pre ran on by...

This one is better than "Prefontaine," and I think Billy Crudup looks more like the real Prefontaine too.

Whether he would have won at the next Olympics, we'll never know. What we do know is that Towne, a man of ruefully romantic temperament, has found a soulmate in Steve Prefontaine. Full Review

With a very good part for a change, Sutherland invests the imposing Bowerman with a host of subtly expressed attitudes toward his most illustrious charge. Full Review

Without Limits wins as a sports film precisely because it's not really about sports or a great victory. Full Review

Without Limits is an admirable departure from the norm, but its greatest strength doubles as an undermining weakness. Full Review

As Pre, Billy Crudup is dynamite -- a magnetic star presence who's unafraid to show how Pre's drive also makes him a bit of a prick.

Towne's most important contribution, aside from his gift for structure and willingness to direct this story in a classic, straight-ahead manner, is the power of his words. Full Review

Definitely has its problems, but it's still one of the best sports movies I've ever seen. Full Review

Its wisdom, and clearly Mr. Towne's, lies in the film's way of filtering a young man's headstrong nature through an older man's more rueful point of view. Full Review

Beautifully made and features a marvelous performance by Donald Sutherland as the track coach Bill Bowerman, but the movie is no more than moderately interesting. Full Review
