Schmaltzy. Way too schmaltzy. It's like Dead Poet's Society on a boat. Good ending (unhappy) but overall, a forgettable film.

A group of teenage boys learn discipline, courage, and what it's like to stick together as a unit as they aboard the Albatross and ride it out into the great wide open in the Caribbean. Whether they're there because their parents want them to grow up and learn responsibility, or ... read more

One of Ridley Scott's less interesting offerings, this ocean bound adventure is typically nicely shot, but the onboard soulsearching is contrived and uninteresting. An interest in and knowledge of sailing would probably help. But I have neither.

I loved this classic movie of a man turning boys to men in this classic pic of boating adventure. It's good.

Jeff Bridge plays his character so tough and strong as the captain of a school sailing ship that it hits that much harder when his vulnerabilities finally show through. Great performance. I think this is the shortest that JB's hair has ever been.

Very heartfelt and some sad parts too, an amazing true story movie that keeps you together as you hope they all pull together as one. Jeff Bridges, Scott Wolf and the rest do outstanding performances

From what I remember, it was a pretty good movie.
Gotta be honest though. I mainly watched it for Jeremy Sisto. -

The 20 or so minutes we spend with the Albatross in the squall is high adventure, to be sure. Everything else is ballast. Full Review
Far too much of this handsomely mounted adventure is devoted to routinely dramatized adolescent minutiae.
The heavy-handedness of these final scenes will probably ruin the movie for some people, while others will enjoy its earnestness and energy. Count me among the latter group. Full Review
Director Ridley Scott, who more than anyone else founded post-1960s visceral filmmaking, is at the top of his form in White Squall.
The movie's a shipload of coming-of-age blather, supplemented with enough rolling-sea footage to make the audience yearn for both Dramamine and a decent drowning scene. Full Review
This film offers just about everything, including a twenty-minute white-knuckle sequence and a chance to shed a few tears. In short, it's first-rate entertainment. Full Review
I enjoyed the movie for the sheer physical exuberance of its adventure. Full Review
An old-fashioned, white-knuckle adventure with the excellent Bridges adding another great characterization to his increasingly impressive resume.
Bridges puts his shoulder to the wheel and impresses audiences.
