Aside from 'Crooklyn' I can't say that I'm a big Spike Lee fan.
But this documentary is so INCREDIBLY well done that I can forgive him some of the mediocre/crappy films he has made prior to this.
Spike brings a face (several actually) and a heart (albeit broken) to the trag... read more -

A thorough chronicle of the devastation and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Sure people talk about Katrina and how horrible it was, but it gets swept under the rug and pushed aside for more "important" things...this was a great documentary and showed, among other things, George Bush (and many of his allies) really don't care about black (or poor) people.

Spike Lee's amazing ear for dialogue really serves him well as a maker of documentaries. When the Levees Broke, his greatest film since Do the Right Thing is mournful, terrifying, sometimes hilarious and beautifully structured.

Documentary mini series on HBO about the Katrina hurricane catastrophy and the lack of responce from the U.S. govt. in New Orleans. Its a very gut wrenching documentary to watch! It angers me so, to think about how careless and uncoperative the Govt. was and still is towards the... read more

The handling of New Orleans after hurricane Katrina was an atrocity. Spike Lee interviews a wide range of people affected by Katrina and captures a lot of footage of New Orleans in disaster. This movie gave me a new appreciation for the people and history of New Orleans.

The Truth about what happened. Very hard to watch, and so sad that the USA gov. tried to cover it up. This is one to own and show everyone you can!

Spike Lee's phenomenal four-hour documentary on Hurricane Katrina and its effects on New Orleans hit me like a sledgehammer to the stomach, and I mean that in the best possible way. How many amazing documentaries have we lost while Spike has been churning out entertaining but ult... read more

Surely the most magnificent and large-souled record of a great American tragedy ever put on film.
What breaks your heart is the film's accumulated firsthand stories of New Orleans residents who lost everything in the flood after Hurricane Katrina, and the dismaying conclusion that a year after the... Full Review
When the Levees Broke is like the New Orleans jazz funeral -- a dirge on the way to the cemetery, an up-tempo parade in the deceased's honor on the bittersweet walk back home. Full Review
Do the flaws diminish Levees? To a degree. But the story Lee tells is so powerful, so important, that the lapses aren't a reason not to pay heed to what this passionate film has to say. Full Review
It's something to make a point to see. Full Review
The film asks many questions, implies answers for the easier ones, but ultimately concludes that some are simply beyond answering. Those are the questions posed in stories of incalculable human heartb... Full Review

Lee makes a convincing case that, compared to 9/11, this is the far worse disaster. Full Review
