We Bought a Zoo Reviews and Ratings

Sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage.
  • May 28, 2012
Cast: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit, Colin Ford, Elle Fanning, Maggie Elizabeth Jones, John Michael Higgins, Angus Macfadyen, Peter Riegert, Stephanie Szostak, J.B. Smoove

    Director: Cameron Crowe

Summary: In this adaptation of Benjamin M... read moreee's memoir about buying and saving a run-down zoo, the locale shifts from Britain to southern California. However, the wacky spirit of the original is retained, complete with escaped tigers and a zoo crew of misfits.

My Thoughts: "A sweet movie about a family struggling to move on and heal. The relationship between father and son is strained and tense. But I think the son is acting out for attention. He is upset and grieving, but having difficulty dealing with his feelings. I think the father, Benjamin, turned a blind eye to it. He seemed more focused on his daughter Rosie (who is played by an extremely adorable Maggie Elizabeth Jones) and her happiness more so then his sons. He even metioned to Dylan that he needed his help to make her happy. That was sad to watch when the son, Dylan, is screaming for him to help him be happy.
I didn't see why Dylan and Lily needed to have the scene of declared love. Seemed unnecessary for the film and forced. Just cheesy."

Finally got around to watching this last night and its pretty good. Nothing super exciting or groundbreaking ever happens but you get a feel good family friendly flick here that might bring you to tears a time or two. It pretty predictable but Scarlett Johansson is amazingly perf... read moreect and can do no wrong in my opinion. The little girl who plays Damon's daughter is beyond cute. Overall a very good family film.

It was a great family movie. It had lots of laughs, great drama, heartwarming moments, good scenery, great characters, fantastic music and a good storyline. It's one of the best family films of the year. I highly recommend this movie to kids and adults alike.

We bought a zoo is a great movie to go see with the family. Damon flaunts his emotional acting abilities with great form but the stage stealer is young Maggie Elizebeth Jones playing Damon's seven year old daughter. Jones is an eccentric little girl who is bound to bring laughter... read more and Aww's out of you. Elle Fanning does a great job as always; Tomas Haden Church plays his perfect role, and Scarlett Johansson levels things out very nicely.

If you want a lot of emotion with consistent laughter, We Bought a Zoo is a great Sunday afternoon choice. Bound to bring tears, smiles and laughter, with a great true story to back it up.

An enjoyable, solid, family movie. The story itself is touching and knowing it is based on a true story is even more wonderful. I would watch it again and recommend it to everyone.

while i appreciate that this movie was based on a true story and i totally want to go to the zoo it is based on, i had a hard time getting into it. the music in this movie was a little too epic for the movie itself. actually, this movie was a little too epic for itself. i foun... read mored the sudden and random extreme close ups of animals paired with intense sigur ros pieces actually caught me off guard and made me laugh. probably not what they were going for. also, we watched this with our son thinking it would be a good family movie but it was definitely not geared towards young kids. we often can't pull him away from the screen but we couldn't get him to stay down to watch this. so, i wouldn't recommend this if you plan on watching with a young child. my favorite part of the movie: the little girl (maggie elizabeth jones).

Matt Damon's worst hair in a long time, but a surprisingly watchable Scarlett Johansen.
