Vampire's Kiss follows the story of yuppie literary agent Peter Loew (Nicolas Cage) as he descends into madness and vampirism. Loew believes he has been bitten by a vampire (Jennifer Beals) and is slo... read more read more...wly becoming one himself, despite the contrary opinion of his therapist (Elizabeth Ashley). He then begins to wage a campaign of escalating terror against his secretary and first potential victim, Alva (Maria Conchita Alonso, looking appropriately baffled). Alva begs her parents to let her stay home from work to avoid her unusual boss, but they force her to go on that fateful day, and the plot unfolds. Vampire's Kiss became a cult item on the basis of Cage's outrageous performance: at one point he actually eats a live cockroach. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

I like Nicolas Cage. He's a pretty good actor. But I really like Nicolas Cage when he chooses to play a character in such an over-the-top fashion, you're not sure whether he's overacting or deliberately trying to make you laugh. Vampire's Kiss is one such movie. It takes a great ... read moreactor to give a truly bad performance, and I can't think of anyone who could have breathed such life into such an asinine movie as this. What's going on in the scenes do not matter. It's the ridiculous overreaction Cage is about to have that keeps you watching.
Cage plays Peter Loew, a douche bag literary agent who seems to really have it out for a young, timid, yet beautiful secretary. He constantly harasses her about a file that seems to have been misplaced, and his deplorable attitude towards her makes you want to kick him in the nuts. Mind you, Cage's odd and random mannerisms consistently take you out of the movie and have you laughing to no end.
Meanwhile, on one of his routine sexcapades at local Manhattan bars, Loew brings home a vampire, who bites him and almost drains him of all his blood. Afterward, Loew pines for this vampire's bite so much that it turns into a kind of obsession. Once he realizes this girl is actually a vampire, he begins to lose his mind, actually thinking that he himself has become one. Then the antics begin....
The latter half of this movie is an absolute riot. Cage walking around with a fake set of fangs pretending he's Nosferatu, chasing pigeons in a park, running along a crowded street screaming "I'm a vampire!" over and over, not to mention the famous scene where he recites the entire alphabet. Vampire's Kiss is as good as any movie you'd rent with your buddies over pizza and beer.
I'm still not clear as to whether this was made to be intentionally bad. People often describe this film as a black comedy, although I quickly grow concern when I hear this term as many filmmakers are quick to label their film a black comedy once they've realized their attempt to make a seriously dark drama sparks too many unintentional laughs. Either way, Vampire's Kiss is very entertaining, thanks only to Nicolas Cage's inanely over the top performance.

So I actually thought this was a vampire flick in the realms of 'American Werewolf' perhaps but in fact it turns out to be a physiological dark comedy about a guy who thinks hes a vampire hehe so slightly disappointed but after watching the film I did think back in a positive way... read more.

I did like the film to a degree, Jennifer Beals was smoking hot while Cage's performance was fun if alittle too similar to previous character performances. The way he changes his voice throughout was amusing but did recall other characters, his outbursts and rages are fun to watch too as is his descent into thinking he is a blood sucker, I loved the sofa coffin and buying the plastic teeth :)

At first I was alittle lost as to what was going on, was it real or all in his mind, I wanted it to be a real vamp flick but alas it seems to have been all in his mind, towards the end it does get tricky to decide what was real or not...hmmm

Fun mainly to see Cage at his wackiest with some glorious over acting but it also shows how limited he is too as you feel you've see him do this before in exactly the same way.

This vampire movie starring Cage is hilarious. A bit confusing and strange in the middle, but overall a very funny and exciting movie.

I only watched about half of this, but if you can stomach forty-five minutes of Nicolas Cage trying to consciously give a comedic performance, you're a stronger person than I am. His attempts at self-referential camp are blindingly painful. I'm convinced at this point that the ma... read moren is truly an idiot who stumbled into one great performance with Leaving Las Vegas and has somehow managed to pull the wool over the eyes of every other director he's ever worked with.

Unless you want to make an incredibly ambitious argument about Vampire's Kiss finding worth through some sort of unknowing cinematic self-reflexivity, which would probably take the kind of effort that this movie doesn't even remotely merit, there's absolutely no reason to watch it. Not funny, not compelling, and not even remotely competent.

Realistically, this is an utterly terrible movie. However, Nicolas Cage's tour de force performance makes this a classic. It's almost like American Psycho, but with a lot less killing and more insanity. It's more or less what would really happen if someone tried to become a vampi... read morere, the plastic teeth and sofa coffin are essential qualities. Then there's the over the top yuppie accent, which sounds utterly ridiculous. For fans of the Cage or fans of insanity put on screen, this is the movie for you.

This makes Jerry Lewis look like Alec Guiness. Nic Cage's performance is so over the top it cannot be matched for sheer cocaine fueled manic insanity. Vampire's Kiss must be seen to be believed.

An interesting foot note film for American Psycho.

I am always surprised when I hear this movie referred to as a comedy. Even the trailer makes it look "laugh-out-loud funny". It's funny, there's no doubt about that, but funny doesn't make it a comedy. It's more tragic than anything. Cage plays Peter Loew as though he thought he ... read morewas in a comedy, which only adds to the tragic nature of the film - the guy has no idea how out of touch he is with the world. Brilliant film.

Black comedy with Cage as the yappie who thinks that he's been bitten by a vampire and is turning into on himself. As the fangs aren't coming through yet.
  • June 9, 2010
American Psycho with vampires is one way to describe this film, but it barely does it justice. The entire film revolves around a gobsmackingly insane performance from Cage - easily the best I've seen him, and after Face/Off I never thought I'd hear myself say that.
Fans of vampir... read morees might like it. Fans of American Psycho will like it, and fans of Nicolas Cage will totally fall in love with it.

Problem is that Cage's over-the-top performance generates little sympathy for the character, so it's tough to be interested in him as his personality disorder worsens. Full Review
