One of the great stories of doomed love is given a new screen interpretation in this historical drama. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, King Donnchadh (David O'Hara) of Ireland has become the d... read more read more...e facto ruler of England, but one of his underlings, Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell), dreams of uniting British forces with an eye toward self-rule. One of Marke's most valuable allies is Tristan (James Franco), Marke's protégé, who has become a brave warrior since he was rescued by the lord after his parents were murdered by Irish forces during a battle. While Marke and Tristan dream of banishing Ireland's presence in England, Tristan has a secret he's been hiding from Marke -- after suffering serious wounds during a hard-fought battle, he was rescued and nursed back to health by Isolde (Sophia Myles), King Donnchadh's daughter, and the two fell deeply in love. But the couple were separated after Tristan returned to England, and when Donnchadh attempts to quell the British uprising by staging a tournament among the nation's greatest warriors, an extreme and rather personal surprise is in store for Tristan. Tristan & Isolde was directed by Kevin Reynolds and produced in part by Ridley Scott, who attempted to bring the story to the screen back in the 1970s. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

James Franco is eaaaassssyyyy on the eyes isn't he? Wowza. Other than that... eh... sorry not much else to say on this...

Melodrama, but decent melodrama. Gorgeous artistic direction and engrossing story of ill-fated lovers.
  • December 1, 2008
Utterly rote romantic drama which retells the medieval legend of Tristan and Iseult. The script is not compelling, the story drags, and the leads barely register any passion whatsoever. If you must see a movie about star crossed lovers, see Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet ... read moreinstead.

War, strategy, jealousy, deceit, power, love, honor and duty.

The story takes place after the fall of the Roman Empire. Britannia is left divided after the Romans left the lands as Ireland stands unscathed.

This 2006 film adaptation of Tristan and Isolde is perfectly blended and well rounded, with a wonderful cast to boot! Watch it if you can!

The ending was a tad predictable, but the story itself is awesome! Its a major twist between action, chick flick, and always keeps you thinking. Awesome movie!

Beautiful. It has a less than appealing ending, but the story is incredible and the cinematograpy is great. Wonderful cast, too.
  • January 19, 2008
Some great action but just a mildly entertaining romance with some decent support from it's stars. Not great but entirely bad
  • October 12, 2007
Ambitious, but not quite there. James Franco, Sophia Myles, and Rufus Sewell give sincere performances, but this film was marketed as a love story. And often I found myself waiting for the love bits, while being bogged down in British/Irish relations. All in all, great film whose... read more marketing caused a tinge of disappointment.

A good romance and action film.

I enjoyed this movie. I wanted to see it in the theater but didn't and then it got some ho-hum reviews. It was beautiful and sad. I liked that the Mark character was likeable but I definitely called it and said that if Tristan had explained to him what had happened in the begi... read morenning then Mark would have let Tristan & Isolde be together, heh. Definitely watch the making of feature, they built all the buildings and the sets and they were incredibly detailed.

Strikes a good balance between action and romance in this version of the medieval legend. Full Review

I can wholeheartedly recommend Tristan & Isolde, even to those who don't have a penchant for period piece romances. The movie has a lot to offer. Full Review

A handsomely produced and sporadically rousing re-retelling of the ancient Celtic legend about star-crossed lovers. Full Review

The movie plods around, appears to pick up speed, but then falters. Worse, we never feel true sympathy for the lovers who are forced to risk all to meet in secret when fate and politics keep them apart. Full Review

We don't find a tale of transcendent passion but rather of two vain nitwits in a case of routine attraction. Full Review

The story itself -- Tristan falls in love with Isolde first, only to see her married off as part of a cold-hearted peace treaty -- is merely dreary, full of overwrought villainy and thuggish jousting. Full Review

Trying to underplay things, the actors practically sleepwalk. When someone finally gets the chance to shout, 'Seize him!' he does so with as much gusto as the guy who says, 'WINS news time: 8:45.'
