    A sprawling, very beautiful ode to music and the crazy badasses who make it. There are a few too many mentions of penises, and some of the comic set pieces in the second act don't hang together as well as they should, but altogether it's a very thoughtful and poetic drama.

    I saw this film on TCM and loved it. It's tthe biography of a young man who becomes the pupil of a Viola maestro in 17th century France. If you like Renaiisance string music, you'll love the frequent performances here. Gerard Depardieu is wonderful, as always, as the now middle a... read moreged man who was once the student who is the subject of the film. Made in France in 1991, the film won numerous awards.
