This historical drama, directed by Agnieszka Holland, focuses on the rocky relationship between the renowned 19th century French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio) is ... read more read more...a teenage wunderkind known for his rebelliousness against conventional society and his surrealistic writing. He disrupts the life of Verlaine (David Thewlis), a more conventional writer who is older and married to a dutiful young wife, Mathilde (Romane Bohringer). The drunken Verlaine is unkind to Mathilde, even though her father is providing him with a house and an income to live on while he pursues his writing. Rimbaud overwhelms Verlaine, mocking his conventionality, constantly disrupting his domestic life, and somehow attracting the maniacal love of the older man. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

A young Leonardo...already an outstanding actor. He absolutely stole this film as his own even at such a young age. I love period dramas, and biographical dramas, so this movie was just perfect for me. Leo portrays a supposedly true-to-life strange and crazy poet in this movie. I... read more can't imagine anyone doing a better job than he did. Very interesting film.

David Thewlis is such a horrible actor that it destroyed this movie. This was a great performance for Leonardo DiCaprio and I feel his portrayal was the only interesting thing about the movie. Even with getting to see Leonardo naked a few times... I still cannot recommend the m... read moreovie. Seeing Leonardo shine as an actor may only be because of the poor acting of co-stars!

I must've been pretty darn bored the day I decided to watch this, and must've been willing to watch just about any movie. It's based on a true story, which is usually a good thing, but I don't agree with the homo or bisexual lifestyle and that's what this is about....but there's ... read moresome good movies about that, but still, this isn't one of them. I just found the story boring (I'm not into art anyway), and I'm sure it's mainly the ladies and a few old perverts that would really want to watch "Total Eclipse" and that just to see Leonardo Dicaprio naked.

Opening credits go on way too long, there is some vacany in the story's execution and the film also slips to some other lows. Still, DiCaprio is, get this, phenomenal. I know, czazy isn't it? He is also hilarious comic relief, which really is shocking when you consider how seriou... read mores of an actor he is, Academy. There are also some other great performances, good lines for DiCaprio, I hate to admit it, but excellent chemistry between Thewlis and DiCaprio and other high points that could have made it a much more solid film, had the story been delivered better. Still, it is an interesting film that's fairly worth checking out.

This story takes place in the 19th century where two French male poets, Verlaine and Rimbaud, start a taboo like love affair. Verlaine is recently married and Rimbaud is much younger and still single. They're both very passionate and talented, and the heated love affair betweeen ... read morethem soon creates a lot of trouble. The first thing that came to my mind was that it was extremely weird watching DiCaprio acting as a homosexual and even weirder watching him making a homosexual love scene. It must've taken a lot of bravery from DiCaprio playing a part like this one. The movie was just ok but not something I would want to watch once more. The greatest thing about this movie was of course Leonardo DiCaprio.

As far as my expectations go, this film meets them completely. That being said, it suffers from boundless problems that even I can't ignore. Directorially speaking, it's muddled and several of the scenes are painfully staged. However, as a depiction of a destructive relationship,... read more this is an effective and disturbing piece. The story itself is fascinating, occupied by despicable but intriguingly unpredictable characters. What makes this such a personal favorite for me is the acting. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a reckless, ferociously energized performance which is always interesting to watch. His emotional devotion is well-studied and impressive. David Thewlis is every bit as good, delivering what may be his most precisely drawn performance aside from Naked. So, if you want to see some really original screen acting in the confines of a flawed picture, give this one an open-minded viewing. If you're one of those people who hates DiCaprio because of the way he looks or some other shallow reason, don't watch it because you won't get anything out of it.

Weird, early DiCaprio. Blink and you'll miss his dinky.

The main characters were abusive and pathetic, and the story dragged on until it seemed pointless to me. A part of me wants to say that it must be good in a more unconventional way because it explored a flawed and doomed relationship instead of a happily-ever-after one, but the t... read moreruth is I just didn't enjoy it. All of the characters' actions were ridiculous to me (especially the constant "please stay/take me back" which has always annoyed me in any movie). I think the only reason I got through the movie is because of Leonardo DiCaprio and his very fanservice-y scenes.

Watching abusive unhealthy relationships makes me incredibly sad and uncomfortable. This movie was an all around downer. It did however, teach me what Absinthe was.

Marvelous performances by a very young and not yet famous Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewlis. Bitter-sweet drama.
