The second feature from Lukas Moodysson, who directed the internationally acclaimed Fucking Åmål, Tillsammans is the tale of life on a Stockholm commune in the mid-'70s. After suffering more than her ... read more read more...share of abuse from her husband, Rolf (Michael Nyqvist), Elisabeth (Lisa Lindgren) takes her two children, Stefan (Sam Kessel) and Eva (Emma Samuelsson), to a commune run by her brother Göran (Gustav Hammarsten). Life at the commune is crowded with people with laid-back attitudes towards sex, nudity, and recreational drug use, prompting plenty of political debate. Göran's partner, Lena (Anja Lundkvist), is a particular proponent of free-spirited bed-hopping, something Göran doesn't really like but tolerates. Lena duly gets involved with the rebellious Erik (Olle Sarri) and finds fulfillment in the form of her first orgasm, something that leads her to confess to Göran that she was always faking it with him. Meanwhile, various dramas are at work amongst the other commune members, including the once-married Lasse (Ola Norell) and Anna (Jessica Liedberg) (who split up when Anna announced she was a lesbian) and Klas (Shanti Roney), whose advances to Lasse are continually rebuffed. The goings-on of the commune are observed and commented on by a pair of neighbors, Margit (Therese Brunnander) and Ragner (Claes Hartelius), whose marriage is so lackluster that Ragner masturbates compulsively. Their son, the fat and miserable Fredrik (Henrik Lundström), befriends Elisabeth's daughter, Eva, who longs to have a family again. When Rolf appears on the scene seeking reconciliation, it seems Eva may get her wish. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

Communal living, free-love and hippies from a uniquely Swedish perspective. Wonderfully nostalgic and, for director Moodysson, surprisingly sentimental.

A really beautiful and funny story and a great introduction into the world of Lukas Moodysson, although, this is his only 'happy' film to date.

Jan 2011 (with Kia, Marisa, Setareh and Kaveh) - I watched this twice within a week and I could easily have watched it once more. These were all after 6 years since the first time that I watched the movie. The comedy is fantastic and more than anything the characters become so re... read moreal that you understand them, you see them and you love them. It is amazing how the movie starts from a community of ideologically driven people and moves you into seeing them as very typical human beings. It is so interesting that the humor is so suited to the movie and not only adds to the entertainment but also prevents the movie to fall into a melodramatic drama.

Together somewhat makes a joke of the typical Swedish suffering in a less submersive way than its counter parts and is the first Swedish movie i've seen with an idealized utopian ending.

In 1969, my mother and father divorced resulting in my mother and I moving into an efficiency apartment near home so I wouldn't have to change schools or lose my friends.. Next door lived 8 hippies of the original breed; acid-dropping, pot-smoking, Boone's farm-drinking, long-ha... read moreired, free-lovin' freaks. I miss them all dearly. My mom trusted me to the 19-year-old almost-but-not-quite-pedophile Scott, so was absolutely clueless to 99% of what went on from 3:15pm when I got home from school until 9pm when she did. In reality, it was much of what you see in 'Together' - A raucous bunch of people, each a freak in his or her own right, completely and totally mismatched as roommates and commune members, and each worth his weight in gold. Thirty minutes into this film, I took a fifteen minute bathroom break that was intended to be the end of the film for me. But fifteen minutes after I came back and decided to keep watching, I was glad I did. Not that the first part was bad or slow, it was too much like real life for me. I'm glad I made it to the end. This is a touching, funny, and warm story, and when you get right down to it, it's a lesson that a lot of us need to learn, or at least to revisit.

The joys -- and pitfalls -- of communal living in the 1970s are rendered with a buoyant immediacy and an ironic accuracy. Full Review

A comedy of crusty exterior and soft heart. Full Review

A comedy of manners set in the hippie heyday of 1975.

The best thing about Together ... is the way it snatches idealism back from the brink of life-smothering orthodoxy. Full Review

In its own subversive way, Together can even be seen as a 'feel good' film - the lasting impression and final images are of unity, acceptance and the importance of community. Full Review

Moodysson has shown himself to be a master of character development and simple (but not simplistic) storytelling. Full Review
