Mel Gibson

Tim is a young man with below average intelligence. He works as a builder's labourer, and is often taken advantage of by his fellow workers and other people. Mary asks Tim to work around her yard for ... read more read more...a day. The day stretches into a few weekends, and the two soon become good friends. Some people, however, are suspicious of their friendship which seems to be continually strengthening, accusing Mary of taking advantage of Tim's innocence. Will changing circumstances in Tim's family life change his relationship with Mary?

    Mel Gibson's second film and it is pretty apparent that the young Aussie is a great acting talent. The film itself is very intriguing, despite a oddly slow paced film. The best part of the movie however is the dynamic between a slow minded man, and his elder parents not the buddi... read moreng relationship between a woman and her gardener. All in all great little movie to watch if you are having a bit of an insomniac attack, and just feel like watching TV all night and into the wee morning hours.

    Mel Gibson took his best shot with this sweet film about a young retarded man and his gentle relationship with an older woman (Piper Laurie) who teaches him to read and to adjust to the real world. Tim's parents come to trust the woman's honorable intentions.

    I will start by saying that this is very much a movie a woman would be more apt to enjoy.
    First you have a young gorgeous Mel Gibson running around shirtless and in hot pants throughout the film.
    And it's a love story that involves a simple minded man "Gibson" some th... read moreink retarded that falls in love with a much older woman named Mary beautifully played by Piper Laurie.
    Tim "Gibson's character" starts to do odd jobs for Mary and he starts to have feelings that are foreign and confusing to him.
    Meanwhile Mary is feeling the same way about him but because of the age difference and his simple mindedness she think it taboo to love him.

    A 22-year-old Mel Gibson plays a mildly 'retarded' young man in this May-December story that is much more than just that. No cheap sensationalism here; this story rings true. You can see a star in the making in Gibson's performance.
