She moves into a hotel for women, run by kindly Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), and she befriends the pretty, petite orphan Dorothy Brown (Mary Tyler Moore). Millie finds work with the handsome bachelor Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), but Trevor has his eyes on Dorothy. So too does Mrs. Meers, who despite her kindly exterior is actually an unscrupulous white slaver. Paper clip salesman Jimmy Smith (James Fox), on the other hand, pledges his undying love to Millie. One day, after attending a weekend party being given at the opulent Long Island mansion of Muzzy Van Hossmere (Carol Channing), Dorothy disappears. When Jimmy and Millie smell opium in Dorothy's room, they realize the awful truth about Mrs. Meers. Trying to rescue Dorothy and find the location of Mrs. Meers' hideout, Jimmy disguises himself as an orphaned woman and tries to get himself kidnapped. The scheme backfires, however, and Mrs. Meers drugs and kidnaps both Jimmy and Trevor. It is left to Millie to find the white slavers, free her friends from bondage and save the day. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

A true childhood favourite of mine, a very memorable tale with song and dance made famous by Julie Andrews.

It's probably not as great as I remember it being, but there is still lots about this film that make it an enjoyable watch.

The movie version is a ton longer and more boring than the musical. Definite upgrade when Sutton Foster did it.

A trio of talented dames took hold of this musical and breathed life into it. Set in the age of the flapper, there are references to the silent picture era, beautiful musical numbers, and the always flamboyant and full of zeal Carol Channing. The entire production went a bit long... read more, and got sidetracked by easy to miss add ons, plus there was the entire side story of white slavery perpetrated by the Chinese overseers of a hotel for single young girls, which took away from what was important. The ending itself was unfortunate, and could have done with a bit of a rewrite. Otherwise, amazing.

If I grit my teeth during the unnecessary musical numbers, there's quite an enjoyable pastiche of silent movies and the roaring twenties in general lurking underneath. The cast cheerfully send themselves up and it's infectiously daft.

Julie Andrews' outstanding in this longest musical movie.

Very dated - in a bad way.

This is a very, very underrated movie. The whole cast is a veritable conglomeration of some of the finest talent of the period (and some are still around): Julie Andrews & Carol Channing? Broadway actresses. Mary Tyler Moore, well we all know her from her sitcoms....The pictur... read moree, itself, is pure camp: It was intended to be campy from the very beginning. If you don't get the tap-dancing in the elevator and "white slavery" bit you will miss the whole point of the humor. It's SUPPOSED to be a SILLY movie based on the pastiche of the 1920s...it's a satire. A lot of the humor is subtle and that is why many viewers both now and in 1967 didn't get it. It is one of my favorite childhood movies and seeing it again not only renewed my appreciation the movies visual work it gave me a deeper appreciation of the cast's talent. I would have loved to have seen the play...but, then would I be hard-pressed not to keeping wanting to see Julie Andrews as Millie, if I did? Know one can do Victor/Victoria--except Julie Andrews and this is a Julie Andrews movie.

Though I love musicals, I think this would have played better without the songs. They are so undeniably pointless, the tunes are hardly memorable, and they make the movie far too long. However the cast is so quirky (CAROL CHANNING!!) and the zaniness is so endearing I couldn't... read more help but enjoy myself. Julie Andrews is an angel.
