The concept behind the movie is very interesting indeed, but I think it can be executed in a more engaging and interesting way...

A little background for those not in the know: Controversial Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi was arrested, tried and sentenced to six years in prison and a ban on writing and directing films and travelling abroad for 20 years by the oppressive Iranian government. This documentary ... read moreis sort of slyly giving the middle finger to the government as Panahi and Mirtahmasb document one day of Panahi's house arrest as he awaits for his appeal. Nothing particularly earth-shattering happens but it is an intriguing look into the private life and career of one of the world's most important filmmakers and the importance of artistic freedom.

This is really not a film... it's more of an image of a regular day in life of great Iranian director, Jafar Panahi, who is in house arrest without a reason and he will probably be sentenced to 6 years in prison and 20 years of not being allowed to make films.

Lars Von Trier & John Cassavetes would be proud. In this seemingly simple exercise in cinematic defiance, the filmmakers manage to explore what it means to make movies. It's a subject worthy of Bergman, Kiarostami and Godard. The film is heartfelt, insightful and humorous. The mo... read moredesty and rebellious nature of the artist is moving and empowering. Despite his 20 year ban and house arrest, the filmmaker can't help but try and make movies. Censorship in Iran is ridiculously archaic and the only reason we are able to see this masterpiece is because it was smuggled into France inside a cake. It manages to answer why it's necessary to make films while also being an astonishing act of defiance. A totally political yet aspirational examination of artistic expression. Plus, we see Igi the Iguana just wanting to cuddle. I never thought a lizard could be so cute.
