The two decide that they have no choice but to go on the run. They eventually meet up with a young criminal named J.D. (Brad Pitt), whose cowboy spirit rubs off on the timid Thelma. The classic female buddy movie. A movie that shot its stars to fame in a hurry.
  • December 8, 2011
Most certainly not an under done chick flick. It's premise suggests ultra feminism and typically mean hearted humour but Thelma and Louise is actually intelligent, entertaining, gripping and ambitious to challenge one's emotions.

Thelma Dickinson and Louise Sawyer are best friends who are both unhappy with their lives. Thelma is married to Darryl (Christopher McDonald), who treats her like crap and never lets her do the things that she wants to do. Louise has a boyfriend, Jimmy Lenox (Michael Madsen), who... read more loves her but refuses to marry her. They set off on a grand adventure that starts off nice and pleasant until Louise shoots Harlan Puckett (Timothy Carhart), a major douchebag asshole that sexually assaults Thelma when shes drunk. They drive off, claiming that they will try to get to Mexico. Along the way they pick up thief-drifter, J.D. (Brad Pitt), who steals their money and takes off. Then, to get money for things, Thelma robs a bank, so now they could possibly be charged with armed robbery. Basically, in classy terms, this pair is the female equivalent of Bonnie & Clyde, two outlaws having fun while finding a side of themselves that they never knew quite existed. Great, and fun story line. A movie that you'll want to watch again and again, just for the pure and high racing fun of this movie.

    Unforgettable film...especially the ending!

For the longest time I passed up on Thelma & Louise for the stupid fact that I thought it would be a "chick flick". Boy was I wrong. Thelma & Louise is a stellar crime film with a great cast. I won't get into detail about the plot because this is one of those films of which every... read moreone has heard of. The cast of actors are terrific, and they each bring something unique to the screen. When Thelma & Louise become accidental outlaws they try to outrun the cops and make it to Mexico. The film finishes off with one of the most memorable and possibly famous endings in film history. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon have great chemistry on-screen and they make their characters believable. This is a highly entertaining film that you won't forget. Thelma & Louise is an essential film to watch if you enjoy road trip films. Don't be fooled by this film, I was for a long time, and when I finally saw it; I was blown away. This is a thrilling crime drama with an engaging story, a great cast and awesome directing from Ridley Scott. Thelma & Louise is a wonderful film. It's no wonder why this film has got the reputation it has garnered since its initial release. The film is a unique blend of crime, drama and action. The acting on Davis' and Sarandon's part is excellent and they truly make this film something to see. Like I said, I was mislead about this film, and I finally decided to see it, and I was very surprised. This is one of the best road trip films, and it's one of the most memorable ones at that.

Thelma: You said you 'n' me was gonna get out of town and for once just really let our hair down. Well darlin', look out 'cause my hair is comin' down!

"Somebody said get a life... so they did."

What a great movie Thelma and Louise is. I expected a lot because of all the good ... read morethings I had heard and because of Ridley Scott. The guy just makes great movies. I really enjoyed Thelma and Louise for a variety of reasons. Number 1: Geena Davis and Susan Surandon were great. Number 2: An awesome supporting cast, including Harvey Keitel , Brad Pitt, Michael Madsen and the first time I've really like a performance from Christopher McDonald. Number 3: The absolute stunning cinematography by Adrian Biddle. The movie is beautiful to look at. Number 4: An awesome score from the great Hans Zimmer. I could go on some more talking about the good pacing and some of the more wonderful scenes, but I'll just leave it with those 4 reasons as to why I loved the film.

The story centers around two friends who are taking off for a couple of days. They want to get away from their dull lives for awhile and have some fun for a change. Things soon go wrong and they end up on the run. The great thing about the story is that the characters are fun to watch and extremely likable. The movie is dramatic, funny and very entertaining.

This ranks with some of my favorite's from Scott; like, Matchstick Men and Alien. This movie is really well made on every level. There is nothing lacking. Everything is top notch; from the performances to the screenplay, from the cinematography to the music. There is nothing here to complain about. In my opinion it's a must watch.

    REVIEW

To escape the unrelenting dullness of their every... read moreday lives, two middle aged Southern women head out on a vacation together. Thelma is a ditsy, innocent homebody married to an unlikeable car salesman. Louise is smart, worldly, distrusting, and a careful planner who works as a waitress. The story starts off routinely as their road trip begins, but takes a non-routine turn when an incident occurs at a restaurant. From then on, the story gradually evolves into a majestic odyssey built on a foreboding sense of desperation, as the two women drive ever westward, through the rugged badlands of the American Southwest. Indeed, this film reminds me a lot of the 1973 classic "Badlands"; except that, as seekers of freedom, Thelma and Louise are far more sympathetic than the two lead characters in the earlier film.

Both Geena Davis as Thelma, and Susan Sarandon as Louise, give terrific performances. They imbue their characters with complex traits that present Thelma and Louise as vibrant and believable, flawed but very human. In support roles, Harvey Keitel as the main detective and Brad Pitt as a drifter named J.D. enhance the film's overall quality of acting. Dialogue lends credible support to the story's characterizations, like when Thelma asks J.D. about his previous petty robbery experience. J.D. purrs in an oh-so-non-threatening way: "Well now, I've always believed that if done properly, armed robbery doesn't have to be a totally unpleasant experience". And Thelma's nature is such that her encounter with J.D. foreshadows the film's ending, which is both emotional and noble.

Filled with mostly country/western music, the film exudes a mournful tone. I particularly like the songs "Part Of You, Part Of Me" by Glenn Frey, and "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan" by Marianne Faithful. "Thelma & Louise" is a very American-type film, filled with dirt roads, open highway, expansive landscapes, and two likable women in search of freedom and self discovery. Technically well made, the film has both entertainment value and thematic depth.

A flawed if very compelling look at two women who become desperadoes after one of them is almost raped by a drunk idiot, and an ugly murder results. There are some problems with how the men in the movie are portrayed (all of them are shallow, stupid pricks for the most part, save... read more for Harvey Keitel's character), but the movie is still hugely entertaining thanks to two tremendous performances from both Sarandon and Davis, and a poetic, somewhat devastating finale. Not the perfect "chick flick" many claim, it also has a couple plot holes here and there, but still a fun, mostly well-done movie.
