A street musician and self-described "Dharma bum," Bittner had no practical background in ornithology when he first encountered the parrots, but it wasn't long before he developed a close bond with them and took it upon himself to feed and care for the birds, and even gave many of them names. Bittner's friendship with the parrots became a growing experience that taught the guitarist as much about himself as it did about the birds, and with the passage of time, his work earned him the respect of his community as well as a home. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is a documentary which recounts the story of Bittner and his birds, as well as an unexpected twist of fate which added a poignant note to their tale. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A beautiful documentary about a truly unique subject. However, I question the motivation, the "honesty" behind closing with the highly speculative killing of Connor by the hawk. As in all life writing, I also question the "truth," in this case, of "miraculously" returning to th... read moree scene to capture Connor on film on his last day of life. Kind of reminds me of Jack Nicholson lauding the rule of coincidence in our lives in The Passenger.

A look at the flock of wild parrots that live in a neighborhood of San Fransisco and the remarkable individual (Mark Bittner) that studied and cared for them over a period of years. Mark was able to interact with the birds on a personal level, calling them by name, to nurse them ... read morethrough injuries and disease, and yet allowed them to remain free. He has also written a book about his experiences. This was fascinating. The extras include well over an hour of additional footage and information about the the birds and their lives since the footage that was used in the main body of the film. This film reached me on a deeper level than I exected. I found myself invested in the lives of these magnificent creatures and the man whose heart was tuned to them and was quite moved by this film.

Sweet documentary about the quirky little personalities of some wild parrots in San Francisco, and the man who looks after them , though as he says near the end, they don't actually need looking after. Part bird documentary, part SF travelogue..

Fun, interesting, and educational documentary. Kids and adults will adore it alike.

One of the sweetest and most endearing docs I've ever seen. I really can't think of one negative thing to say about this incredibly charming film.

You'll be surprised by how good this film is when you watch it, I know I was.

This is a very sweet and fascinating about a man and the relationship he has with these wild urban parrots. This doc really humanizes this little birds and magnifies their personality quirks so much so that by the end of the film you're just sorry to see the credits roll.

    An exquisite film.

In the early 1970s, pony-tailed protagonist Bittner drifts into San Fran's North Beach to live what's life's left in the Beat Generation, homeless for 15 years, sleeping on rooftops, voraciously reading philosophy at City Lights, but still the aimless dharma ... read morebum. Then, when he starts feeding a pair of wild cherry-crowned parrots, his karma, his purpose in life, slowly envelopes him.

As the flock grows - as Bittner humbly, quietly, tends to its needs - so does community word-of-mouth. Small generosities yield much of what Bittner and the birds require: a latte and biscotti, a bag of bird-seed, a rent-free home near the flocks' perch. And then so much more. An education in ornithology, a niche in photography, a journal that becomes a published book, a stream of income, even love - a full life - all finds its way to Bittner while he simply stays upon the gentle path these birds have unknowingly provided him. Would that life only yield any of us such karma.

There's more anthropomorphism here than a viewer will find in any other film. Bittner knows every individual bird's most intimate social and behavioral details - and patient camera-work substantiates his every word, making the extensive gandering of these parrots not just visually lush but intellectually fascinating as well.

Be sure to savor the new landlords squirming while trying to explain away their eviction of Bittner.

RECOMMENDATION: A gentle, inspiring lesson in what intrinsic purpose, true leadership and pursuit of one's passion can yield. Well recommended.

A great story about finding humanity in unlikely creatures. Average filmmaking hurts the bottom line. Great ending!

An absolute delight and nothing like the wimpy nature film its title suggests. It's a soaring -- figuratively and literally -- documentary with a surprising emotional power. Full Review
