Meredith Willson's second Broadway hit (the first and biggest was The Music Man) proved a lucrative vehicle for the equally unsinkable Debbie Reynolds. Based on a true story, the film casts Debbie as ... read more read more...hoydenish Molly Brown, who wangles her way into Denver High Society when she marries "overnight millionaire" Johnny Brown (Harve Presnell). When the local social arbiters give Molly the brush-off, she pulls off a coup by bringing a representative of European royalty, Prince Louis de Laniere (Vassili Lambrinos) into the Colorado community. Her admiration for the prince causes a rift in her marriage; it takes the sinking of the Titanic--wherein Molly heroically commandeers one of the lifeboats and is responsible for rescuing several of the passengers--to bring Molly and Johnny together again. While the energetic performances of such songs as I Ain't Down Yet and Belly Up to the Bar Boys are to be cherished, the real highlight of The Unsinkable Molly Brown is a society ball which ends up in a pie fight between the Denver "elite" and Molly's rambunctious mining-town cronies. Treated condescendingly by the critics, the film struck a responsive chord with audiences to the tune of a $7.5 million gross. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This may be my Favorite Debbie Reynolds Movie. She Certainly Acted the Heck out of it as the Loud, Overbearing, Strong,Socially Unsophisticated, but Lovable Molly Brown who comes into Oil Money Overnight. They Climb the Social Ladder by Shoving those on the Ladder Rungs aside while... read more she steps on by them with a Friendly Howdy. All her Outlandish History is Great Fun, but what makes her a Heroine of History is that she is one of the True Life Survivors of the Titanic & her Spirit & Courage that gave her the Nckname , is the driving force behind her saving many other people from drowning on that Fated Day.This is a Story of Spirit, Courage, & Kindness that everyone should Delight In.

It's a good story, but as a biography it is insulting and highly fictional. It is way too overblown and Debbie Reynolds, although I admire her energy and perkiness, gets mighty irritating after awhile. How she got an Oscar nomination for this escapes me. The production is lavish,... read more some catch tunes, gaudy bit creative costumes and art direction. Hardly accurate period flavor.

This is one of the many films i grew up on. I adore a good old fashioned musical! You're not a true fan of them if this isn't one you've seen.

Saw this on television as a young boy... wanted nothing more than to sail on the titanic and dance around a fabulous living room!

Debbie Reynolds is great, but she's not how I pictured Molly Brown (too cute, perhaps?). Great music.

There's a reason why Charles Walters' musicals are less remembered than Stanley Donen's.
