An art house late night weekend favorite back in the day (like Rocky Horror), a dying woman tells of a hidden treasure --- setting off a crazy cross-country race for the loot played for yucks. Sound familiar? Like Its A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (made 7 years prior)? Well it IS ... read more

Ippolit Vorobyaninov: You're not worth spitting on!
Father Fyodor: Oh yeah? Well, you are!
Mel Brooks' second film, which involves three men all trying to get rich quick in communist Russia. A different sort of film from Brooks, which may not be as much a laugh riot as some of ... read more -
March 11, 2012fb100001266995067I'm a big Mel Brooks fan and have loved all his movies but this one. I understand why the critics loved it but for audience it was missing the entertainment value, there was nothing there really to keep you intuned.

Mel just got a Kennedy center award, so we got this out. Still holds up very well. Not laugh out loud, like blazing saddles, but a very good movie just the same. I really enjoyed watching it again!

A pretty strong effort by Mel Brooks. Doesn't have quite the same overwhelmingly hysterical effect as a few of his others, but there is some definate funniness within. Also, surprisingly touching and complex at times. What? What?

I loved this one more than I probably should have, but the acting in it was great and considering this is Mel Brooks' 2nd movie I'll give him props.

Fantastic movie--absolutely hysterical. Frank Langella is stunning (and funny) and Dom DeLouise is THIN.
Critic Reviews
Probably the closest Brooks ever came to making a 'normal' film. Full Review
A hit or miss spoof of Communism saved by zany performances by Brooks and DeLuise. Full Review
Hope for the best, expect the worst - and get something in between. Middling Brooks, with flashes of brilliance.
Dull
Goofy, funny, smoothly enjoyable.
...has a kind of earnest, threadbare, yet endearing charm to it....a rare pleasure.
