Three cheers for Geraldine Page! I admired her character's spunk and determination in this movie, and I felt like I was watching my grandmother who passed away when I was 7--something about her mannerisms made me smile with fond memories.

Wonderfully acted, with Geraldine Page finally winning her Oscar, and she is terrific. Fine cast, Carlin Glynn scores in a supporting role. It's a bit of a downer, but there are uplifting moments along the way. The films cinematography is fine, it has a nice look to it.

The wife was definitely a selfish shrew but the mother humming hymns all day would pluck my nerves, too!

I'd put this in the category of The Notebook. Another fine expression of what it means to grow old. If you don't get it, you need to. :o/
