In the wake of such Satanic-themed thrillers as Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist and The Omen comes The Sentinel. As luck would have it, a mysterious blind priest (John Carradine) who lives upstairs happens to be guarding the doorway to Hell, and she has been chosen as his replacement. Incidentally, when the door is finally opened, out spills an assortment of deformed humans whom director Michael Winner hand-picked from hospital wards and circus sideshows. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

I'm still not 100% sure how I feel about The Sentinel. I don't know if its the chest cold that's kicking my ass or the movie, but I feel like I never got my bearings, like I never got settled in as far as the movie was concerned. (I'm sure this is part of its effectiveness, but s... read moretill...) The all over the board cast was definitely neat but once they started dropping in throughout the movie it started getting distracted. A lot of the imagery was randomly jarring (from the creepy cake threesome and Beverly D'Angelo rigorously masturbating to the last ten minutes) and I'm glad I saw The Sentinel but its definitely one of those movies you really don't need to see again. Catch it if you can but don't lose any sleep if you don't.

Silly 70's occult "thriller" which doesn't provide many chills. A considerable amount of the trouble is that Cristina Raines is so flat in the lead. She projects nothing, has no screen charisma or any discernable acting ability. Another problem is that the script makes no sense r... read moreeally and the characters often behave very stupidly, at one point the lead says she is starting to lose her motor control and no one insists she see a doctor instead they take her to a party! Plot lines are also picked up and dropped at random. What really makes this worth a view, and one is enough, is the incredible cast. In almost every scene a familiar face pops up, some vintage stars like Ava Gardner but also people just starting out at the time like Jeff Goldblum, Jerry Orbach and Tom Berenger.

Absolutely insane piece of celluloud. Michael Winner, you crazy bastard!

Don't let this impressive cast list fool you...most of them are in very minor roles. Though it is still fun seeing them in their "swinging 70's" mode. Christopher Walken (in a nearly speechless role) as a police detective "side-kick. Beverly D'Angelo as a lesbian/nymphet. Ava ... read moreGardner (gorgeous & brilliant) as a real estate agent!

The film itself almost has a "made for 70's tv" feel to it. And suffers at times from some really bad dialog and (sadly) from the poor acting of the lead actress (Cristina Raines) who I was just not impressed with AT ALL. She wasn't even believable as a fashion model! How difficult is that? Just stand there with a blank look on your face and don't eat anything! :P

That said, the film does at times have a nice eerie feel to it and is not without some truly creepy moments.

Turn off all the lights (and any high hopes) and just enjoy it.

Great cast. Too bad Jeff Goldblum and Chris Walken had such small parts. Alsmost to the point of needlessness, I think Walken said 1 line in the whole movie. Had some fun parts, but I was finding myself wishing there was more crazy messed up stuff.

In my opinion, underrated creepy, suspenseful and atmospheric horror movie that delivers a few genuine shocks which turned memorable.
Great cast with good acting, good directing and great ending.

Someone sold the lofty goal of riding the Omen/Exorcist satan wave to a Hollywood studio. They put a huge chunk of cash together to get a strong cast. And then spent more money on a huge bag of coke and turned out a horrible piece of shit.

Christina Raines is very beautiful, I j... read moreust wish she could act. But even the old-timey Oscar winners couldn't save a movie about the gate to Hell being locked away in a Brooklyn apartment building. Location scout: Genius. Casting: A saint. Script writer: Douche.

A pretty creepy movie with a pretty good cast to go with it. At times this is very uneasy to watch, but it has some decent gore and a decent story to go with it. The ending was a bit bizarre and it gave you something to think about. The seventies sure seemed to have some decent a... read moretmospheric horror movies.

One of those 70's horror movie gems. For true horror fans, this movie does not disappoint. The visuals in this movie were astounding for the era and definitely pushed the envelope.

I watched this years ago on reg. TV. This was much better with many scenes that were deleted for reg TV viewing. a very young Christopher Walken. Fun to watch

The cast is certainly impressive, but in every other respect this horror in the vein of Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist is a second-rate piece of tut. Full Review

One of the best horror films of the 70's. An intriguing story and disturbing imagery make this one stick out in the psyche.
