A superb film. A beautifully rendered treat for the eyes and the senses.

This film is exactly why I don't like independent films. The director focuses more on the so-called "aesthetic" details of the film and they consume all aspects of it. He stuffed SO MUCH SYMBOLISM about how pure Mui was he practically beat us over the head with it. The characters... read more

This film was mention to be similar as the Lover. Was it the same movie I just saw?! It could not be, as the film I just saw was beautiful, but there was no passion as there were in The Lover. Maybe this was just publicity to attract the potential viewer to see this movie? If on... read more

I enjoyed this Cinderella story set in Vietnam in the early fifties and sixties. The cinematography is noteworthy and love conquers all, always, no matter the culture.

I wouldn't trust anyone who ranked this movie highly to not be a pseudointellectual. The cameraman on this film took himself way too seriously. They also hit you over the head with the idea that the main character has a special view of reality and appreciates those smaller things... read more

Scent of Green Papaya's warmth and beauty create a magical feeling that's more important than narrative. Full Review
Almost silent, and marked by great pictorial beuaty, the film revolves around a young Vietnamese servant during the French occupation, though politics remains in the background--a classic coming of age Full Review
A portrait of a tranquil Vietnam unknown to most Westerners . . . a lyrical and magical movie-masterpiece. Full Review
A terrific film, one of tremendous visual beauty, but one that steers clear of any overt political messages. Full Review
