A superb film. A beautifully rendered treat for the eyes and the senses.

This film is exactly why I don't like independent films. The director focuses more on the so-called "aesthetic" details of the film and they consume all aspects of it. He stuffed SO MUCH SYMBOLISM about how pure Mui was he practically beat us over the head with it. The characters... read more are flat and ugly and speak maybe 1/8 of the time. I hated the music - it was SO repetitive and I was really glad when the dad ran away so I wouldn't have to listen to him strum on his stupid qin again. I'm being nice by giving it two stars because I liked the one scene where Mui cracks open the papaya and touches the seeds. Otherwise, blegh.

This film was mention to be similar as the Lover. Was it the same movie I just saw?! It could not be, as the film I just saw was beautiful, but there was no passion as there were in The Lover. Maybe this was just publicity to attract the potential viewer to see this movie? If on... read morely it did have some passion or some life to it, I would have greatly enjoyed this film. Instead, it was a tortured slow paced and not particularly interesting film. It was not a bad film, after all it is very beautifully filmed. I kept waiting for something exciting or interesting to happen, but then the movie just ended. There was no great sense of excitement, mystery or anything, just a simple story about a young girl who becomes a servant and spends the next 10 years of her life working as a maid.

Absolute favorite movie! I've seen this several years back, geez! I've forgotten this for a while, but I love it still!

I enjoyed this Cinderella story set in Vietnam in the early fifties and sixties. The cinematography is noteworthy and love conquers all, always, no matter the culture.

considering this movie is 20 years old, its timeless and plays like a Disney-like Cinderella story. I found it amazing at how this movie captures the pure innocence of a child. Even though the main character serves her caregivers, scrubs their floors, cooks their food, cleans the... read moreir belongings, she manages to find pure joy in the unnoticed things. Like the smell of morning or the papaya tree, the frogs when they come out at night, the gratitude and appreciation she gets. It was very refreshing to see all that in a movie, when nowadays cruelty, violence, or special effects take precedence over anything that is simply authentic.

The cinematography is the highlight here, as is the smart back-and-forth between diegetic and non-diegetic sound. I wasn't picking up a lot of the apparent subtle details, but it's definitely very smart in what it chooses to tell us and what it merely implies. I have a feeling th... read moreis one will sink in deeper on second viewing

This movie is the reason why I actually prefer independent movies. The lush cinematography is visually stunning and fills you with the sense of watching moving art. It's absolutely amazing!

I wouldn't trust anyone who ranked this movie highly to not be a pseudointellectual. The cameraman on this film took himself way too seriously. They also hit you over the head with the idea that the main character has a special view of reality and appreciates those smaller things... read more in life thatwe all take for granted. They promote this theme with scene after scene after scene of her gawking at household items. Gets really tedious after al while. Also, half way through the film, the director realized that he didn't have a plot, so he starts the film over from scratch. The character never evolves in any interesting way. It's just a very self indulgent film from beginning to end. But if you're a film snob, you'll love it.

A great movie that shows how a young girl grows up as servant girl and finds love at the end. Its a cute movie.
