Detective Abel Grey (Edward Burns) isn't willing to write off the case as a suicide just yet, and with a little help from sympathetic teacher Betsy Chase (Jennifer Ehle) he hopes to uncover the truth behind the mysterious and untimely death. As a series of elusive clues lead Detective Grey ever closer to the truth, he is forced to confront not only the increasingly complex facts in the case of the student death, but his own repressed emotions related to the suicide of his older brother years earlier as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

An interesting mystery with a good cast, The River King though has a good story, at times it leaves a lot to be desired and the scripts limitations doesn't make this film great like it's supposed to. The film is entertaining, and the story is engaging, but the film could also hav... read moree been a lot better. As a whole, The River King is a good film that has a concept for a story, and for most of the film, it's engaging, and entertaining. However there are things that could have been done better. Luckily the cast keep this film from being awful, and the performances here save this film from being a dud. If you enjoy an average mystery film, then this is a good film to watch, but if you're expecting something elaborate, you won't find it here. There are some good ideas at work here, but they never quite get off the ground. Edward Burns delivers a good performance as the cop investigating the suicide of a student at a prep school. Though not a perfect film, The River King has enough good elements to make it an entertaining, if somewhat uneven. I enjoyed the film that it was a good little film, but also thought there was room for improvement. If you enjoy average mystery films, then The River King is the film to see. Entertaining, but flawed. The performances at least were worthwhile. Overall The River King is a good film, but could have been done better, but at least there are far worst films out there.

Based on a novel by the same name, The River King is about a cop who finds a body in the river and sees more than the explanation given. Edward Burns is great as Abel Gray, leading a young, unknown cast, with his emotionless persona. He makes the perfect cop, because of this stif... read moref, focused personality. The story was strong, often throwing you off the track you are on, and using flashbacks to tell the background story. The music, montages, and flashbacks throughout the movie help to tell the story of the school, people, and town, almost as much the dialogue does. A pictures says 1000 words, in The River King, many obscure actions and random things have their own words and that helps make it unique.

The River King is based off the novel of Alice Hoffman. The movie is about a detective Abel Grey who is played by Edward Burns. He is sent to investigate the death of a student. The police department believes that the death of the student is a suicide. But he believes that studen... read morets death is not. The movie starts off slow but starts to pick up some speed towards the middle. I thought that Edward Burns did a good job in the movie but even he can't save the movie. I thought the was good until I got to the end of the movie. The movie is not going to be for everyone and because of the way the movie ends I can't recommend the movie to anyone.

Solid filmmaking and an interesting premise drive this small mystery but a lack of a strong script hurts. Burns is good but there is so much started without a place to go.

The River King is another star turn by Edward Burns. An excellent mystery told with insight into character and a great deal of atmosphere. There were some creepy scenes that made me fear for a while that this film was going to disappoint me by offering a ghostly solution -- so di... read moresappointing in a mystery. But the creepy elements wound up fitting in perfectly with a realistic mystery story.

I felt NO chemistry between Ed 7 leading lady. Very poor casting in a mediocre adaptation of a great Alice Hoffman novel. Ed turns in his usual hard guy performance, & newcomer Rachelle LeFevre was great.

I liked how it started, but man the story was all over the road like Mel Gibson. I can't figure out what it was going for, but it failed.

The movie starts out fairly well but ends up being one choppy piece of work.

The acting somewhat sucked from just about everybody. Edward Burns had his good moments but he fails to reel you in emotionally and therefore, you don't sympathize with his character in the end. Rach... read moreelle Lefevre has her good moments as well...they are both so close and yet so far from getting into character.

The storyline itself was alright. Burns is a detective trying to solve a mysterious death and in turn is illuminated by his own brother's suicide. It would have been fine if they kept the whole "fling" thing (between Burns and Ehle) out of it. For one, it was pointless; it had nothing to do with the story...and two, you don't even see it coming! You can kinda tell they like each other from the glances...but at one point she just jumps on him (she's engaged, mind you) and the whole bedroom scene takes off from there. It just didn't feel right within the movie itself and the chemistry between the two was non-existant but they tried to make it work. They failed. Miserably. And the actual filming effect they were going for, for that scene didn't work either. Apparently they were trying this blur effect and if anything it looked more like poor camera handling.

They really make you think there's this big conspiracy going on so you're hoping for some kind of twist in the end, but it doesn't happen. You're left feeling a bit confused and wondering why they added/kept certain scenes to begin with.

They had so many tangents going to this film that I really don't think they knew where they wanted to go with it.

I wanted soo much to like this film, but the horrible acting made it hard to like any of the characters and the choppiness of the story made it even more difficult.

This is, of course, just my opinion.

Twas alright. I can't say that I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time, but it wasn't bad either.

One possible outcome after another is broadly telegraphed as the movie plods along, but most lines of inquiry are never to be resolved. Full Review

Pablo Villaca, Cinema em Cena

Sem jamais optar entre uma linha narrativa realista ou fantasiosa, o filme se fragiliza também em função de uma trama frouxa que traz personagens desnecessários e uma conclusão pessimamente resolvida.

A slow-moving, badly-written, and messily constructed whodunit that succeeds in being boring and not much else. Full Review
