Just a flat out weird interpretation of Lord Of The Rings, but this doesn't have the awesome roto-casting animation that the first one had. This definitely had the most singing in any non-musical ever, which makes the movie completely pointless and boring at times. I just don't ... read more

The original animated movie covered the first 2 books. It wasn't perfect, but it was very interesting to watch in this post-Jackson era. The Hobbit also had some wonderful designs and interesting moments. Return of the King, is a poorly rushed and choppy completion for the animat... read more

I really enjoyed "The Hobbit" by Rankin/Bass, but thought this movie was a bit of an embarrassment. The animation used the odd Rankin/Bass style as the Hobbit, so I couldn't fault it too much. I found most of the songs painful to sit through. I did get a good chuckle out of the d... read more

So incredibly bad. At least the animated Lord of the Rings wasn't a musical. We can't say that here. Although "Frodo of the Nine Fingers" is a catchy tune.

The animated version of the Lord of the Rings saga comes to a close in this really condensed cartoon.

I have yet to be able to sit through the whole thing. A horrible adaptation, with a tone that fit more with the Hobbit than the most exciting installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The animation style just makes me cringe: it had nothing of the eerily dark Bakshi version, ... read more

A good retelling of Rings Vol 3. More accurate to the book than Jackson's, actually. Best part: The influence of the Ring through performance, music and eyes.

The cartoon that I watched from childhood over and over...Rankin & Bass do an excellent job with the animation! Oh...by the way, this movie is NOT rated R!

A better version of the story for my little ones. You get the happy yet sad ending without the gore of Peter Jackson's version and can still teach an appreciation of the literature.

In vain more of the fellowship cartoon and not the hobbit this story has issues but it is still enjoyable especially for young boys.
Critic Reviews
McDowall is terrific
I love this. All of it. Although I adore what Peter & Co. did, I think this movie, for sheer atmosphere, slightly nudges out his Oscar-winner. Really.
The cartoon version isn't that bad, espcecially when they couldn't use the first two books in the trilogy.
Works even less well than The Hobbit, which really is a children's story overbearing folk-ballad soundtrack doesn't even gesture lyrically to Tolkien's poetry. Full Review
