It was originally broadcast as a four-hour miniseries on the NBC network. The story faithfully chronicles the many adventures of sailor Odysseus (Armand Assante), his colorful crew as they encounter a variety of mythical figures, including Odysseus's spiritual guide Athena (Isabella Rossellini), the seductive Calypso (Vanessa Williams) and the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Highlights include the Trojan Horse (made to original scale and filmed on location in the ruins of Troy) sequence. Much of the miniseries was filmed in Europe and on the Mediterranean, making it a feast for the eye. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Terrible special effects, anyway, The Odyssey is a entertaining adventure.

Kind of corny at some of the parts but it was an awesome movie & even though Odysseus had many trysts while he tried to make it home to Penelope, he never stopped loving her. I also loved the bond between him & his son, Telemachus. One of the best scenes was at the end when Odyss... read moreeus killed all Penelope's suitors & the other one was when him & Penelope reconnected after 20 years. Just a great movie, especially considering the crap we usually have to watch in school. You'll love it! :)

The Odyssey suffers a bit from spotty effects work (though they're possibly some of the best effects work a TV mini-series has ever had) but it makes up for it with surprisingly solid acting and an excellent screenplay based on Homer's epic tale. I don't know it The Odyssey is a... read more must watch but it's certainly the best filmed version of the story and I give it a strong recommendation.

It was a good adaptation of Homer's epic. The effects were understandably not-so-good. The actors were great though some of them overdid the acting a little. I was also glad to find that this tried its best to be faithful to Homer's masterpiece. Though there are some changes, it ... read morestill has that Homer touch. Campy, absurd, and overgory, but still slightly fun. Doesn't even compare to the source material. 50/100

Not a bad movie about a Troijan war hero Odysseus.

The movie seems to be rather true to the myths and manages to fit in a lot of mythology-related content. However despite that it still feels slow in places. There were some really great and intense scenes, like the escape fro... read morem Scylla and Charibdys, and also the fire-infested scene in the Underworld. In fact the depictions of Scylla and Charybdis in this movie were spot on, although I expected Scylla to be in the midst of an ocean as opposed to inside a cave.

The first few scenes of the movie briefly summarize the Troijan war and even show us some battle scenes. I personally liked that bit.

The acting was rather good across the board. We do get to feel remorse for Odysseus and to understand his pain of being far away from home for so long. Although most of his crew do not get as much screen time, some of them still do form distinct personalities.

Not a bad mythology movie overall. I'd just cut out a few drama bits and stick in more epic stuff, like creatures and battles.

I've always loved these old 60s, 70s, 80s movie adaptations of Greek myths and tragedies

I don't actually remember this and I thought Jason/Jeremy London was in it, but I also remember Isabella Rossellini, so who knows, eh? Um, I didn't really like it that much and I think the effects than the original one.
