The still very undead mummy experiences insane jealousy in this the third of Universal's Kharis thrillers. Although he was thought to have perished in a fire in The Mummy's Tomb (1942), Kharis (Lon Ch... read more read more...aney Jr.) is once again wreaking havoc in the town of Mapleton, MA. Sent by the High Priest (George Zucco) to retrieve both Kharis and his ancient love interest, the Princess Ananka, from their resting places at New York's Scripps Museum, Yousef Bey (John Carradine) learns that the princess has turned to dust. Her soul, however, seems to have been reincarnated as Amina Mansouri (Ramsay Ames), an Egyptian exchange student studying with Mapleton Egyptologist professor Norman (Frank Reicher). The latter's experiments with brewing tanna leaves turn ugly when Kharis appears. Soon after, Amina's hair develops grey streaks and she experiences strange and unsettling trances, unsettling especially for boyfriend Tom Hervey (Robert Lowery). Investigating Professor Norman's strange death, Inspector Walgreen (Barton MacLane) sets a trap for Kharis, but the crafty mummy escapes with a prostrate Amina. Hiding in an abandoned mineshaft, Kharis, to his distress, learns that Yousef harbors more than a religious interest in the beautiful Amina and promptly kills him. With the reincarnated but rapidly decaying princess in his arms, the mummy, to the horrors of the townspeople in general and Tom in particular, blithely walks into a nearby swamp and slowly sinks into the quagmire. ~ Hans J. Each Mummy movie featuring Kharis begins the same way...with the Old High Priest handing off his job of taking care of the Mummy to some new young person...who usually doesn't make it through the film. This time he hands it off to John Carradine, who had played Dracula in "House... read more of Frankenstein", who yet again plans on resurrecting Kharis (again played by Chaney), and also his girlfriend Ananka this time around. That added twist is the only thing that differentiates this Mummy flick with any of it's predecessors. Resurrect a Mummy, watch him lumber around, steal a girl, and save her before killing the Mummy "for good". Nothing all that new or special here, but if you enjoy watching the Mummy limp around town for an hour...then this is a film for you.

Another watchable entrant in this series. The ending though was quite a surprise which with the predictability of this movie was quite different than what I expected.

Exciting and downbeat (unusual for a Universal Monster flick of this period) Mummy film is probably the best of the sequels (of which there were four). Lon does the Mummy thing as good as usual but the real stars of the film are John Carradine, wonderful as the evil high priest ... read morecharacter, and Ramsay Ames (isn't that a great name for a Mummy movie?), haunting and sad as the female lead and object of the mummy Kharis's desires. The production is nothing special for the mummy seires but the script is good and a few of the locations are different (a colllege, an abandoned factory, a swamp) and make for a interesting, well-made sequel. Check it out if you're a fan of mummy flicks...

Occasionally atmospheric series entry with unusual dowbeat tone.

Another silly Mummy sequel, with Chaney still shuffling around looking for his lost love.
