Roy (Dylan McDermott) and Denise Solomon (Penelope Ann Miller) have decided to give up life in Chicago and relocate their family to secluded North Dakota sunflower farm. While the tranquil sway of the lush yellow fields at first offers a welcomed reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the big city, the family soon begins to suspect that they are not alone on the farm when teenage daughter Jess (Kristen Stewart) and her three-year-old brother, Ben (Evan Turner), begin to see a series of menacing apparitions that are apparently invisible to adult eyes. As Jess and Ben's encounters with the malevolent spirits grow increasingly violent, the parents of the tormented teen soon begin to question their daughter's sanity. Soon, the dark history of the family that once lived in the remote farm and the troubled past of the frightened Jess begin to merge as she struggles to warn her parents about the terrifying confrontation with the supernatural that is about to unfold. John Corbett, Jodelle Ferland, and Brent Briscoe co-star in a rural tale of terror from Ghosthouse Pictures and producer Sam Raimi. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Not actually all that scary. I expected a dumb storyline, and that's what I got, but having said that, it was enjoyable enough to watch. Cast are all fine, special effects don't really look real, but they still look good.
My main criticism is that there seemed to be something w... read morerong with the soundtrack to this (maybe just on the UK blu ray, I don't know), the sound affects were really, really loud, while the speaking bits I could hardly hear. I had to keep adjusting the volume, and then jump through the roof when the scary bits came on. In the end I just turned the volume down lower and put on the subtitles. Not really an ideal way to watch a movie!

Pathetic. This is a great comedy though, due to the fact that it is not at all scary.

Chinese directors Oxide and Danny Pang have proven they can handle a good supernatural ghost movie with films like "The Eye" trilogy and "Bangkok Haunted" under their belt back in Asia, and their first English language feature in the western world was not too bad neither. The Pan... read moreg brothers usually write their own material but with "The Messengers" they were working with a fairly routine and unoriginal plot that held no real surprises except for the unexpected twist near the end. The film relies mostly on "Boo" scares but there are a couple of moderately creepy moments and scary occurances. It was entertaining enough but won't go down as one of the directors' best efforts, but it's better than a lot of other PG-13 ghost flicks out there.

Kinda scary but oh-so-formulaic, it's not worth it.

Despite some good imagery and tense atmosphere, the movie ultimately unravels because its story shifts tone and doesn't end up making sense because of it. Sometimes explanations simply ruin a good premise that would have been fine left alone, and this is one of those cases. It ha... read mores some genuinely spooky scenes in there as well, but that doesn't matter when you are rolling your eyes in the next scene. Performances are meh except for Kristen Stewart, who seems to be the only person in the movie who cared. Not an awful movie, but not one I can readily recommend either.

The Messengers is a horror film that has received a bad rep. I don't know why. I found the film to be entertaining, and unlike every Hollywood film that has come out, it's not a remake. It's an original story written by the Pang Brothers, who directed the original version of The ... read moreEye. The film is a pretty good one, not the best. But still pretty good. I am a die-hard horror fan, I love the legendary horror films, I am a big John Carpenter and Dario Argento fan and just to show you, I do recommend this film to people who want to watch a fairly decent Horror film. I found it to quite in intriguing and relied on atmosphere and suspense. It won't be considered a classic, but it sure will satisfy anyone who likes original horror films. Entertaining, suspenseful and with a good enough story to keep you interested, this is a film worthy to check out. Considering I love films by legendary Horror directors such as Argento and Carpenter, that just should say something that I enjoy a half decent horror film at times. This is what The Messengers is, a fairly decent horror yarn, that uses suspense=, and thrills to create horror, and it works kinda. The Messengers is a much better film than what the critics have said it to be. After all, some critics praise really bad remakes, so who are the judges. This film is an original story, but I guess that because Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame stars in it, than people have it's boring and uninspired. Well As a diehard fan of legendary horror gems, I can say without a doubt that this is a passable entry in the horror genre. There are far worse horror films out there than this one. So give this one a shot, you may be surprised at how good it really is.

Scared me, but I'm scared of everything. Early performance from Kristen Stewart.

I thought it was good about 3 years ago, but now I have come to realize how incredibly bad it all is, and the visual do not help this epic piece of crap!

I actually jumped. Some scenes were really scary.
  • October 25, 2009
Although I rather enjoyed the majority of the ghost effects and the spooky goings on, I was disappointed by the ending. The plot wasn't really much different from the average ghost story, except for the ending.

Overall I'd say it was worth watching once, but I wouldn't go to ... read moreany spectacular effort to watch it again - and if I did see it again I'd probably shut it off before the end.

[The film is] hampered by hauntingly lame performances by McDermott and Miller, who phone in their parts, and a screenplay that has the sophistication and complexity of a college dorm message board.
