    This collection of 85 super-short "actualities" (aka documentaries) from the French movie pioneers The Lumiere Brothers contains an informative (and sporadically hilarious) running commentary from French film historian Bertrand Tavernier that's worth the price of admission by its... read moreelf.

    These films, which date from the late 1800s, capture slice-of-life shots from all around the world... moments that would have otherwise been lost forever. Often taking their cameras out into the streets of their native France and just shooting whatever was going on, they invariably captured art.

    The quality of the films vary sharply, with some looking like they've been through the war, and others looking like they were shot yesterday. A marvelous document of amazing historical significance, assuming you have an interest in both early cinema and the 19th century.
