One of the toughest and best-remembered sports movies of the 1970s gets a humorous makeover in this comedy. Paul "Wrecking" Crewe (Adam Sandler) was once a famous professional football player, but aft... read more read more...er several years out of the limelight and an alcohol problem have taken their toll, Crewe is arrested for a serious traffic accident aggravated by the fact he was drunk. Crewe is sentenced to Allenville Penitentiary, where Warden Hazen (James Cromwell) is something of a football fan. Hazen had organized his guards into an impressive football team, and clears a healthy profit by taking bets on their games. Looking to make the competition more interesting, Hazen suggests that Crewe put together a team from the inmate population to play his guards. With the help of fellow prisoner Caretaker (Chris Rock), Crewe recruits the heaviest hitters from the cell block for the team, but the guys don't play like a unit until Crewe and Caretaker get some help from Nate Scarborough (Burt Reynolds), a former college and NFL coach doing hard time. Adapted from Robert Aldrich's 1974 box-office smash of the same name, The Longest Yard also features rap star Nelly and Nicholas Turturro; the film has previously been loosely remade in 2001 as Mean Machine, with the action moved to England and the game changed to soccer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The Longest Yard remake is a yet another prime example of a remake that is terrible. The film is awful. With a bad cast, it's no wonder that this film is bad. James Cromwell and William Fichtner are the only two good actors here, and they are totally wasted on a bad film like thi... read mores. Adam Sandler continues to prove that he is a terrible comedian, and with only three good comedies to his name, he really should get a clue that his films are terrible, and that he's quite unfunny. The Longest Yard is awful, and I was expecting something good with this film, but boy was I disappointed. The original film was decent, nothing too great; but this film is crap. The comedic relief in Sandler and Chris Rock is terrible. I hated it. Two awful comedians in one film are a guaranteed comedic misfire. Which is what The Longest Yard remake is. After a while, I really felt bored and uninterested with the direction of the film. The film was pretty boring and lacked anything interesting or engaging. The film fails at being a comedy, and its execution is clumsy and sloppy. The jokes are stale and unoriginal. This is a pointless remake to a classic film, and it should've never been made. The film doesn't work as a comedy due to its lacking effective comedic talent. I hated this film, and in the end it was a boring film to be avoided. The film was a poorly made comedy that didn't deliver effective laughs.

Just a weird movie to me. Almost like the producer just wrote things out on paper as fast as he could and decided to make a movie about the contents of that paper.

Again another amazing Adam Sandler film. You wouldn't expect anything less from him.

Is this a comedy or drama? One moment its funny, the next its all sad, then were laughing again, then everyones all sad again. It had funny moments, but this film lacks good characters, good story, and doesnt live up to great football movies.

I did have this film rated lower, but after another viewing, I'm bumping it up a little. This film is by no means perfect, nor is it the funniest movie ever, but I was completely entertained the entire time. A good comedy film! I recommend it!

Here's the thing, I've never seen the original, but it's probably a better film. I have my reasons for why I think that, and it just seems like a reasonable thought anyway. What's weird though, is that this film, based on what I've read, is basically (to use some sports talk) a p... read morelay by play remake.

Here's what's really strange though. I actually enjoyed this. Moreso than I figured I would. I originally wasn't interested in seeing this, but it came on TV and I felt like not doing homework, so I gave it a chance. I'm suprpised i liked it. It is predictable and cliched, but it's pretty entertaining, and fairly fun, too.

The humor is pretty typical of Sandler films, which bugs me since the original apparently is very gritty, hard-edged and full of dark humor, which is something absent here- especially given the PG-13 rating. This film gains some points for being full of energy and boasting a large ensemble of notable names (mostly athletes) . Having Reynolds appear is a ncie touch, too. I think what I liked the most was the chemistry between all the performers- especially Sandler and Rock.

What I mostly appreciate about this film is its honestly: it delivers exactly what it promises, and that counts for a lot. I actually gave it an extra half star for that one. Call me nuts for doing so, but I give this one a mild recommendation.
