The Indian Runner, Sean Penn's debut film as director (he also wrote the script, based on the Bruce Springsteen song "Highway Patrolman") is a brooding tale of two brothers -- one peaceful and sedate,... read more read more... the other violent and aggressive -- whose natures, left unchecked since they were children, are set to the boiling point as they head toward middle-age. David Morse is the quiet brother, Joe Roberts, who is a deputy sheriff in a small town. His older brother Frank (Viggo Mortensen) shows up on Joe's doorsteps, after a recent run-in with the police. Frank tells Joe that he is coming back home to stay and that he has given up his criminal life. His wife Maria (Valeria Golino) is skeptical, but Joe tells her that he is prepared to help Frank get his life back together. Frank has almost convinced himself that his future holds real promise and he's ready to start a new life with his pregnant girlfriend Dorothy (Patricia Arquette). But, once again, Frank's violent temper explodes, and everyone's plans for Frank's future crumble into rubble. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Not sure but I guess that I may have been able to appreciate it more had I understood it more.

Great Penn movie with two amazing actors doing some of their best work... oh yeah, and one God (Bronson) taking a hiatus from ass kicking to give an amazing performance. It's awesome how Penn uses great actors the world has forgotten about (Bronson, Mickey Rourke and Michael O K... read moreeefe in The Pledge, Morse at the time) and gets the performances of a lifetime out of them. A great story about 2 brothers with different mindsets and ideals. And Bronson is in it!

    A fantastic movie!

Touching tale, but didn't live up to its full potential.

ACTING:Some very good performances in here. Mortenson and Morse play their parts very well. Arquette also does a decent job, but is kind of let down as she is the comoc relief of the fil at times.

SCORE:Great soundtrack and well done score.

EFFECTS:This is the movie's high point whether you choose to agree or not, for the birthing scene with Arquette, is actually a real-life birth of a baby. I it's her or not I don't know, but that's a real scene. If it's not, then they did a damn good job of simulating.

OTHER CONTENT:Now to finish my statement in plot....emotional potential. It had so much emotion bottled up to leaking points, but that's all that got out was the leaks. It was a good film, but it could've packed a better emotional punch.

OVERALL,a good drama with a kind of unsteady plot, very good acting, great soundtrack/score, real effects, and emotional lack.

This movie was ok in a few parts but for the most part dragged ass and felt kinda meh to me. The actors were good enough but I couldn't stand Patricia Arquette at all and she was especially annoying in this. Dennis Hopper was under used just like he was in true romance, funny eno... read moreugh Patricia Arquette was over used in both this and TR. David Morse is not a leading actor and Viggo Mortensen was too good for this movie. Speaking of under used...Charles Bronson felt like an extra in this with the role they gave him, which was extremely disapointing to me. Pretty much if this movie wasn't directed by Sean Penn it would have been a fart in the wind back in 1991 but then again it sorta is now.

Sean Penn?s stylish direction is very effective in making this film work. Well photographed and visually appealing. Sometimes the slower pace works, but at times it drags the movie along. Very well acted, especially by Viggo Motensen, excellent support from Charles Bronson. The c... read moreharacters are interesting and get you involved in the film. Good score.

What a tedious movie this is. Borders on boring. I only watched it because I knew it was based on the Springsteen song "Highway Patrolman". Great song. You'd think it would translate well to film. Not in this case. Sean Penn can be forgiven, as this is his first attempt to write ... read moreand direct. Nevertheless, IMO, he fails on both counts. The whole "indian runner" theme was under-developed. A couple of scenes were outright dumb. Acting was sub paar on behalf of practically everyone involved. The only thing "The Indian Runner" has going for it is the bare bones of a story, thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Maybe some day it will be developed in a more professional and entertaining manner.

See it because Sean Penn did a hell of a good job on direction.
See this before Viggo Mortensen became a mythological creature. (See him also in Prince of Darkness...tasty!)
See this because the restrained character portrayal by David Morse is brilliant.

Depressing, ponderous, in places even pretentious. But full-frontal Viggo nudity makes it ALL better.
  • December 24, 2006
Not the greatest movie, but certainly worth watching for the incredible performances of Viggo Mortensen and David Morse.

Rambling, indulgent and joltingly raw at times, Sean Penn's first outing as a director takes a fair amount of patience to get through but has an integrity that intermittently serves it well. Full Review

Loose, rambling and sometimes rudderless as it is, "The Indian Runner" has a fundamental honesty that gives it real substance. Full Review

Penn surrounds his brothers with supporting characters who are so well-realized, I'll remember them as long as I remember the leads. Full Review

Penn is trying to get at gritty American ''truths'' about love, brutality, and blood ties. Somehow, though, it's all a bit pat: By now, even these stark themes have the ring of movie conventions. Full Review

The film is slow and pretentious, but it's a feature debut and Sean Penn, a distinguished actor, is good with his cast. Full Review
