The Girl (Claire Keim) is a beautiful, bisexual cabaret singer who one night meets The Painter (Agat... read more read more...he de la Boulaye), an artist who is immediately and intensely attracted to her. The Girl and The Painter spend the night together, and are soon involved in an ongoing relationship, with The Painter spending most of her time at The Girl's flat in Paris. Meanwhile, The Painter finds it's not easy to break off her relationship with Bu Save (Sandra N'Kake), while The Girl is trying to keep her boyfriend, The Man (Cyril Lecomte), from finding out to much about her new romance, since she needs to maintain their relationship for the sake of her career. The Girl is the first feature film from Sandee Zeig, who helped to open the independent distribution firm Artistic License; it's based on a novella by Monique Wittig, who wrote the screenplay with Zeig. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is the worst movie ever. Worse than Showgirls. Worse than Glitter. Just mind-numblingly boring and fucking pretentious. STAY AWAY!!

Critic Reviews

Derek Elley

Derek Elley, Variety

Pretentious dialogue is matched by equally uninvolving performances in this debut feature by Sande Zeig. Full Review

Terry Lawson

Terry Lawson, Detroit Free Press

Forces you to endure endless streams of badly written paragraphs of pseudo-poetic existentialism to get to the sex parts. Full Review

Loren King

Loren King, Boston Globe

Its ambition and beauty ultimately triumph over pretense.

Philip Wuntch

Philip Wuntch, Dallas Morning News

Celebrates the emotional and physical liberation that comes with lovemaking, while also recognizing that such exhilaration sometimes carries a price. Full Review

Carla Meyer

Carla Meyer, San Francisco Chronicle

Numbingly dull and repetitive. Full Review

Bruce Westbrook

Bruce Westbrook, Houston Chronicle

This may be a slow film, but there are worse settings for aimlessness. Full Review

Carrie Rickey

Carrie Rickey, Philadelphia Inquirer

One senses more intensity in the female-male power dynamic than in the female-on-female couplings, which are stylishly shot but emotionally detached.

Geoff Pevere

Geoff Pevere, Toronto Star

The kind of chic, academically minded art movie in which pose replaces performance, archetype pinch-hits for character, and that nothing much of interest happens is presumably deliberate. Full Review

Kevin Courrier
August 17, 2001
Kevin Courrier, Globe and Mail

Instead of providing alluring personalities, Zeig and Wittig create vague archetypes to make their glib ideological points. Full Review

Joe Baltake

Joe Baltake, Sacramento Bee

Finally too languid and silly for its own good, with dialogue that could make you wince. Full Review
