This comic interpretation of Alexandre Dumas's classic adventure saga picks up where 1974's The Three Musketeers left off, as D'Artagnan (Michael York), Athos (Oliver Reed), Aramis (Richard Chamberlai... read more read more...n), and Porthos (Frank Finlay) scuttle the plans of Lady de Winter (Faye Dunaway) to remove Queen Anne (Geraldine Chaplin) from the seat of power. De Winter is determined to get revenge against the Musketeers, and when she learns that D'Artagnan is infatuated with the lovely Constance (Raquel Welch), she first tries to foil their romance by seducing D'Artagnan herself, and then by persuading Rochefort (Christopher Lee) to kidnap Constance. She then engineers the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham (Simon Ward), a close friend of D'Artagnan; when word of the Duke's death and Constance's imprisonment reaches D'Artagnan and his comrades, the foursome ride off to rescue the fair lady and see that justice is done against de Winter. The Four Musketeers was filmed concurrently with The Three Musketeers; it was originally intended to be one film, but when director Richard Lester realized the movie would be over three and a half hours long, the decision was made to release it as two separate features instead. This led to lawsuits filed by several of the stars, claiming that they were hired under false pretenses and entitled to be paid for making two films rather than one. The actors won their case, but their settlement was significantly less than the salary they hoped to receive. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I couldn't imagine the first film of these back-to-back classics being topped. I'm happy to be wrong. I actually like this one better than the first and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe because it's darker, or maybe because there's more action than the first. I'm not exactly sur... read moree, but I know that I fell in love with it upon seeing it. I'll be watching this one again for years to come!

first off, this is by no means a sequel to the three musketeers but rather the second half of what was intended to be a 3 1/2 hour roadshow film with intermission. it wasn't meant as a stand alone film and it seems a little unfair to judge it as such. seeing the first half with... read moreout seeing this is just like reading half of the novel, which it follows closely. this half is quite a bit darker and mostly concerned with the machinations of milady dewinter, a marvelously evil performance by faye dunaway, who will stop at nothing to have her revenge on d'artagnan and the musketeers. for this it has earned a spot in my femme fatale list :D

This is a sequel to the Three Musketeers from the previous year, and it features most of the original cast, and is directed by the same man, but it's really not as funny or exciting as the first, I was disappointed.

More of the same with this film...but it never gets boring, it just gets better and more interesting. The cast really is a classic lineup of Hollywood stars which just adds a unique one off experience not ever matched.

Excellent sequel to the slapstick original with an all star cast and much darker tone than the original. If you like Oliver Reed in Gladiator, you'll love him in this.

This was fairly boring. Wasn't as good as the first.

These two movies are supposed to be the best adaptation of the book The Three Musketeers. I've never read the book. The movies do a good job of placing you in the 1600's in France. The costumes and props all look right. The plot of this movie is just the conclusion of the first m... read moreovie. The makers of this movie lied to the actors and paid them to make one movie. Then they filmed two movies simultaneously. This is second half of the story and was released as the Four Musketeers. The acting is excellent. The plot is simple and most of the sword fights were in the first movie. They had flash backs of the first movie to link the two movies together. There is still a lot of slapstick comedy that has nothing to do with the main characters or plot. It was as if they couldn't decide if they wanted to make a Monty Python movie or a serious movie. The plot of this movie is much darker than the first movie. These could have been serious dark movies with murder and intrigue but when ever someone died it was treated like a joke. The sword fights were classic Hollywood style swordfights. They also actually shoot muskets in this movie. But no one gets hit except background characters. They use matchlocks and wheelocks. A couple of times I spotted a flintlock and cap lock that hadn't been invented yet. Usually they depicted the firearms as crude and inaccurate. They save the final climatic sword fight for the end of the movie. I saw both these movies at the Cowboy Mall in Stillwater Oklahoma north of the OSU campus. Mr. Leachman who owned the movie theaters in Stillwater at that time knew that most of his customers were college students with little money. Instead of showing first run movies he would show re-releases so that he could keep the ticket prices down. So I saw these movies a couple of years after they had been first released. There is more dialog in the second movie than the first but it's hard to follow since they try to talk in English with a mixture of French and English accents.

Dark, overwrought, misogynist and way too much action with very little substance, the only thing that saved me from being completely disgusted was the sexiness of Oliver Reed.

Combine this with Lester's prequel and they would still be seamless. Of course they were filmed simultaneously. I cannot imagine any reaso for re-makes after these gems.

Not as good as the first, it really disappointed me, especially because of how York's character changes so much, and the ending was horrible.

The conclusion to THE THREE MUSKETEERS is an equally satisfying romp. Forget all other MUSKETEER films of the past century. These are the pinnacle.

A grand mixture of adventure and comedy at the deft hand of Lester.

More a continuation than a sequel (this and it's predecesor were filmed at the same time, prompting some changes in SAG rules), this is still one of the best adaptations yest of the Dumas stories.
