Better Luck Tomorrow director Justin Lin picks up where John Singleton left off to offer a high-octane look at the world of underground Japanese drift-racing in the latest installment of the super-cha... read more read more...rged Fast and the Furious film series. A frustrated teen from a broken home, Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) is an outsider looking to make a name for himself on the illegal street racing circuit. When Sean is busted by the police for his high-speed exploits and given the option of either spending time behind bars or moving overseas to live with his no-nonsense, military man father who's currently stationed in Tokyo, the young rebel packs his bags and sets his sights on Nippon. Though at first reluctant to adapt to the unfamiliar customs and foreign code of honor of his new home, Sean soon strikes up a friendship with American speed freak Twinkie (Bow Wow), a like-minded race fan who schools the inexperienced newcomer in the pulse-pounding world of drift-racing. Inadvertently challenging local champion and yakuza associate D.K. (The Drift King) his first time on the road, Sean is subsequently forced to work under expatriate Han (Sung Kang) to pay off his debt after failing to cross the finish line first. Taking note of the young American's affinity for racing as he warmly welcomes him into his merry band of misfit drift-fanatics, Han slowly introduces Sean to the key principles of the popular new racing style. When Sean makes the potentially deadly mistake of falling for D.K.'s girlfriend Neela (Nathalie Kelley), he'll need all the help he can get to face his most challenging race to date and take on the most notorious driver on the Tokyo drift scene in a hair-raising, hairpin-turn race where the winner truly takes all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Tokyo Drift is the weakest in the series and wasn't very good. The story was weak and very boring, I never found myself getting interested in the characters or story. The race scenes were fun but that is all they focus on getting right in this movie. Overall I was dissappointed, it cannot live up to its predecessors or sequels and sadly it is just a money grubbing sequel that didn't try hard.

I thought this was the worst. Only the stunts might be entertaining to watch but the whole movie was crap. Vin Diesel was like a treat in the end. And Brian, please don't smile like that, you look gay.

Justin Lin drops the cars in Tokyo, and while it delivers in that aspect, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift doesn't get much help elsewhere.

The bulk of this film takes place in Tokyo and it's not until it gets there where it takes off. In other words, the first

... read more 10 minutes is mediocre at best. As for the plot, well it isn't exactly top of the line, but apparently there is enough to fill a 100 minutes of screen time.

The segments involving souped-up cars do stand out, and the drifting approach proves to be a fresh taste for the racing and stunt work; hence the title.

Lucas Black is a disappointment. His character is unlikable and his performance can hardly be considered good enough for a lead. Sung Kang ends up with the most amusing character of the bunch and deserves more exploration. The beautiful Nathalie Kelley provides some eye candy, but not much else for this film.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift isn't bundled with surprises of any kind. It is what it is. A money-banker with cars and girls in skimpy clothes.

When yet another town sees Sean Boswell getting into trouble with the law, his mother sees no choice but to send him out of the US to live with his father in Tokyo, Japan. However it is not long before Sean gets involved in the illegal racing scene yet again. Taking in by Han, Se... read morean immediately clashes with DJ, the son of Yakuza Kamata over the racing and also the latter's girlfriend Neela.

Five films into this franchise and nobody is really even pretending that anyone is here for the characters or plotting subtleties. So instead we have a choppy script that expects us to buy the laziest and nonsensical plot devices yet - witness the way that Sean gets in with Han, it makes little sense but the script doesn't let that bother it as it blunders onwards. What it blunders towards is the thinnest of excuses for lots of car chases, load music, male posturing and sexy girls in skimpy clothes. That the plot is poor is a given and it is probably not worth getting into it because I don't think the makers were aiming for more.

It is also perhaps unfair to criticise them for this because they hit their targets with ruthless efficiency. Knowing their target audience the makers deliver the goods when it comes to what male teenagers will be looking for and it does it in noisy spades. There are lot of shiny toys and lots of races full of unlikely moves and screeching tyres. Personally I found them repetitive and lacking the tension and involvement that comes with action built on top of strong characters and stories but if all you want is the gloss then I can see why it would appeal. What I found a little less easy to swallow was the film's treatment of women. At best the women are love interests with a bit of history but the majority of skimpily clad and dancing - quick to flock to the male characters and always ready to give out phone numbers. Lesbians kissing in a corridor are thrown into the mix for no reason other than titillating the male viewers. It is nothing new in this type of film but it is tiresome to see it - is this the message we want to send to teenage boys!? The cast are average to a man. Black is pretty poor and I quickly tired of his accent and his character. He rarely manages to hold the attention when sharing the screen with anyone and is thus not a great leading man - even at this level. Bow Wow is at least fun and he benefits from not really taking it too seriously - in the more serious moments he is weak but that is to be expected. Tee is a solid presence in the baddie role but, with more dialogue to undermine him, Kang is not up to much. Kelley is cute but is not given much more to work with. I thought she did the job but not much more than that. Sonny Chiba buys the movie cult points in a cameo. Lin directs like one big pop video but not a very imaginative one since he revels in the obvious touches of flair and lacks imagination in his delivery; good for what the audience wants but is that all he wanted to achieve?

Overall then a film that does what you expect of it, which will either be a good or bad thing dependant on your viewpoint. It is noisy, full of rootless action, devoid of characters and convincing plotting and at times sounds and looks like nothing more than an extended music video - which is just what it is I suppose. Knows its target audience really well (depressingly well) but will have little to offer those outside this limited demographic or seeking more.

Definitely the "Halloween 3: Season of the Witch" installment of the "Furious" series. Other than 2 smaller parts to the movie(Vin Diesel at the end, and Han who is in the next two, I think) this has nothing to do with the other movies. Lucas Black acts just as wooden as Paul W... read morealker, and Bow Wow does a pretty good job. The story is more about the cars and racing than the others as well, and I gotta say the race scenes are better than the first 2. Director Justin Lin really breathed new life into the series and used this as a springboard to bring everyone back for 4 and 5. Not the best of the series, but it is a worth while movie with plenty of action.

Tokyo Drift is pretty much a remake of The Fast and the Furious with minor changes. And like most remakes, it isn't only inferior to the original, it pretty much sucks monkey balls.
Lucas Black plays Sean, an American sent to live with his father in Tokyo to escape a jail sentenc... read moree for street racing. So what does he do in Tokyo? He finds the street racing circuit. Cue the cars and hot girls dancing like they can hear the film's soundtrack. Sean finds out that Japanese racers practice a style called drifting, which he quickly finds out is quite difficult. But he catches the eye of Han, the guy who owns a body shop and is into some shady dealings like stealing supplies and money from a Yakuza boss. Because Sean crashes Han's car in a race, Han takes the kid under his wing to race for him to pay down the debt, mainly to beat Han's rival, DK, who happens to be the nephew of the Yakuza boss.
Wait! I've seen this movie before! Sean is Paul Walker minus the cop bit. Han is Vin Diesel, and DK is Johnny Tran! And then somehow Bow Wow fits into the picture as the go to guy in Tokyo; weird.
With dialogue as lame as only scriptwriter Chris Morgan can write and a plot that is the most predictable thing since Titanic, Tokyo Drift is yet another stake in the heart of what originally looked to be a very interesting franchise. Director Justin Lin, who made the great Better Luck Tomorrow, creates some pretty flashy race sequences. The problem is that they look extremely staged and edited together with a real lack of continuity. Watch the anime or film version of Initial D instead. That's real drift racing. The crap in Tokyo Drift is showy nonsense that would only work on a closed set with hundreds of stunt people and first aid crews standing behind the camera.

I wish there was more than just a cameo to hold us in. So, there is a senior high school student who breaks the laws at home due to street racing, and eventually has to be shipped off to live with his father in Tokyo, Japan, and it is has a great atmosphere for racing fans. As he continues what he loves while in Tokyo, Sean (lucas Black) meets new characters and races to earn respect. When he loses his first race he must repay him by owing him a car. It seems similar to the original, but hey, it's the fast and the furious, story is not what is meant to be key here. Tokyo Drift is great fun!
