Approached b... read more read more...y the shadowy Church (Bruce Willis) to overthrow tyrannical South American dictator General Gaza (David Zayas) and restore order to the troubled island country of Vilena, stoic soldier of fortune Barney Ross (Stallone) rounds up an unstoppable team that includes former SAS soldier and blade specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham); martial arts expert Yin (Jet Li); trigger-happy Hale Caesar (Terry Crews); and cerebral demolitions expert Toll Road (Randy Couture). Traveling to Vilena on a reconnaissance mission with his old pal Christmas, Barney meets their local contact, a cagey guerrilla fighter named Sandra (Giselle Itie), and together the trio scopes out the landscape.. It isn't long before Barney and Christmas have discovered that their actual target is not General Gaza but James Monroe (Eric Roberts), a former CIA operative who has recently gone rogue. Monroe won't be easy to get to either, because his hulking bodyguard Paine (Steve Austin) is a force to be reckoned with. When their mission is compromised, Barney and Christmas are forced to flee, leaving Sandra behind to face almost certain death. But Barney isn't the kind of soldier to abandon a mission, or a hostage, and now in order to get the job done he'll need the help of his old crew. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

First off, the dialogue is absolutely horrible. Sylvester Stallone should never write a screenplay. The action is fun at times but it isn't as good as it could've been. No memorable scenes. Some horrible CGI as well. However, every scene Jason Statham is in, he rips it up.

Mr. Church: Only thing you need to know is the job's real, and the money's real.

"Every movie has hero. This one has them all."

Despite not believing The Expendables would be any good, I still felt compelled, as a guy, to watch it. This is one of those movies that guys just fe... read moreel the need to watch. Why? I don't know, because it really sucks.

Basically this is just an excuse for Stallone to get together a bunch of well known action stars and throw them into one movie. Most of the stars aren't that good and most of them never were. Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austen, and Terry Crews aren't what I think of when I think about good actors. The movies populated with mostly bad actors, with a few decent ones(Statham, Roberts, Stallone) and only one really good one(Rourke). The cameo appearances by Schwarzenegger and Willis in the same scene was pretty cool though.

As you would expect from a Stallone written and directed movie, it's nonstop action and violence. There's blood spraying everywhere, knives flying around, and a constant echoing of bullet fire. The film is also lifeless and dull. The stylized violence isn't cool or fun to watch at all. Mostly because we've seen it a million times and we've seen it done much, much better than this.

The Expendables is a big mess of an action film. It's all forgettable crap. I'm sad to see that there's going to be a sequel. I'm even sadder because I know I'm going to end up watching it.

A group of mercenaries are employed to kill the general and drug kingpin ruling a South American island. I approached The Expendables expecting a kind of comic deconstruction cum knowing homage of the 80s action film, but guess what? This is no Kiss Kiss Boom Boom. Instead we get... read more EXACTLY what Stallone has been doing for years. Verbatim. Basically you spend the duration watching a collection of fat-necked, rubber-faced old men with skull tattoos who ride Harley Davidsons and date ex-strippers, high fiving each other after a long day at the office committing mass murder. The action scenes are okay if you like that type of thing, but Stallone is a bit too gleeful in his representation of mutilation, evisceration and decapitation making it all feel a bit tasteless and unpleasant rather than fun and exciting. It surely holds some kind of Guinness record for "blowing shit up" but it happens so often, by the end it actually gets a little tiresome. Incredibly loud and incredibly stupid, it's not as bad as some of Stallone's debacles of the 80s, but it's still yet another 90 minute slice of Sly mid life crisis.

Big, dumb and stupid. The only way I could have possibly been entertained was if my IQ went down a notch and I had an unhealthy obsession with testosterone driven men.

As an action film it really barely does the job done, which begs the question as to why so many stars signed up... read more on such a lackluster project.

The humor lacks wit, the action lacks style and the characters are a bunch of outdated archetypes.

Half the movie it should have been.

Stallone is one of those actors who can pretty much do no wrong to me...not sure there's a single movie of his that I don't like.
  • December 15, 2011
Stallone's direction hurts most of the action sequences, not to mention wasting Jet Li. Overall it's ok for a rainy Saturday, but we can get a better 80s revival vehicle. Hopefully the sequel delivers.

The cast is more impressive than the movie itself, but The Expendables is still a passable mindless action flick. Hopefully the sequel will have a story that's worth paying attention to between the bullets, explosions, and people setting other people on fire and then punching the... read morem in the face. There's an attempt to make a few of the characters more than scowling mugs holding guns, but really this is just an explosion-fest, for better or worse.

I went in with about the amount of expectations you would expect from a slam bang action junk food movie, and I wasn't disappointed. The Expendables wasn't anything particularly special, but it was very enjoyable with a great cast. As long as you go into it knowing what to expect... read more, I don't think that you'll be let down at all. Sure not all of the dialogue and acting is all that great, and yeah the final minutes of the picture involve a very long action sequence, but there is some character built into the story, and that counts for everything with me. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the sequel.

Gee I think they would have done better to not make the film but they only did because Sly was rejected for the casting of RED. In the end you want to just hit Statham for making such a crap movie.

It was ok. Got bored throughout the film though, I think I fell asleep while in the cinemas. Jason Statham carried this film. He's an amazing actor and a beautiful, man. Dissapointing however.
