A tough, tender, observant, exquisitely nuanced portrait of mixed emotions at their most confounding and profound -- all at play within a deliciously damp, un-touristy Hawaii that's at once lush and lovely to look at. Many bracing scenes, truncated by the montages that remain the only blemish on director Alexander Payneâ(TM)s technique.

This film is a real mixed bag, funny, interesting, happy & sad all rolled together. With an amazing back drop & a fantastic soundtrack. Clooney is also excellent in this film.

Good characters and acting with some humor despite the downbeat subject matter.

Nothing quite gets me like George Clooney lately. Like "Up in the Air", he draws me into the deep drama of his wife and family joys and tragedies. The movie takes a beautiful full circle plot that makes me love and hate the characters right along with Clooney. The moments of l... read moreaughter were perfectly placed to relieve tension. Fantastic movie.

It is particularly rewarding to see Clooney outside his comfort zone of self-composed cool in The Descendants, Alexander Payne's beautifully gentle, funny and moving film. A pitch-perfect movie that threads a microscopically tiny needle between high comedy and devastating ... read moredrama. Clooney has never been better, subtler, more deeply rooted in a performance than he is in The Descendants. And he's funny, too. Clooney and Payne are coconspirators, too. They know that the story they are telling is too emotionally complicated to muck up with a lot of preening and artifice. They head right into the sad and crazymaking humor of the situation. This is a modest marvel of a movie. Expertly mixing tears and laughs with the sort of alchemy not seen since "Terms of Endearment," this superbly written, directed, acted, and yes, Oscar-friendly movie perfectly captures the blackly comic insanity that can overtake a family forced to confront an impending death. To call The Descendants perfect would be a kind of insult, a betrayal of its commitment to, and celebration of, human imperfection. Its flaws are impossible to distinguish from its pleasures.

VERDICT: "High-Quality Stuff" - [Positive Reaction] This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent. (Films that are rated 3.5 or 4 stars)

    ***Spoiler alert***
I work in a hospital so I like to see a factual representation of medicine. Most of the hospital scenes were realistic except for the ending where they take her off the ventilator and allow her to die naturally.

Early in the film, there was talk about don... read moreating Elizabeth's organs. If they really intended to do that, they would not have taken her off the ventilator as that would cause permanent hypoxic damage to the organs. They would have declared her brain-dead, and harvested the organs promptly. It bothered me that they didn't respect her wishes. Showing all the people her organs helped would have been a better ending.

A slow moving, sometimes plodding, movie that still possesses a warm but sad quality that matches its main character. I was surprised The Descendants received as much critical praise as it did, and although I do think it was a bit overrated, George Clooney was quietly superb in h... read moreis role and the Best Actor nod was definitely deserved. The harsh language was too much- the only reason the movie was rated R - and it felt like it was often peppered in to spice some scenes up or make the movie seem "edgier" (although, given the situations placed in the movie, some of that is completely understandable). The views of Hawaii were breathtaking and the story offered a very interesting scenario although I felt like it wasn't explored quite as deep as it could have been. Although the film gave a very satisfying and somewhat uplifting ending, I walked away feeling like I did after seeing Marley and Me: very sad but oddly elevated from the storms of life...much like the characters themselves.
