Boring. Yet I was compelled to watch... weird.

Focusing on the stories of Middle-American families in the aftermath of a Nuclear attack, this film follows a long heritage of films depicting the effects of Nuclear Fallout.

Sadly, this one isn't terribly good, especially if one has seen earlier treatment of the same material ... read more(The War Game, for example). Far too often one is reminded that this is a made-for-TV movie. The film is made as if the only way to make someone learn about Nuclear Fallout is to pander: there is a vast cast of characters, each with their own melodrama, so everyone can relate so something... which ends up making its 2 long hours a foggy mess.

Still, a few moments manage to be actual cinema, especially a moment where, with Russian missiles incoming, a mother refuses to stop making her bed, and has to be dragged screaming into the basement/family bomb shelter.

Despite some shocking and honest treatment of material, this film still plays more as melodrama than as a social commentary.

Shocking and depressing. Watching this makes you want to get rid of all nuclear weapons in the world. The scenes of everybody frying instantly were haunting.

The Day After follows the story of a group of citzens in kansas trying to help out get home rebuild and just plain stay alive after the US and Moscow attacked each other with nuclear missles and the few surviors or left to deal with the fall out. Made For Tv movie really well don... read moree story is alittle bit thin and does take abit to get its point across but well worth a watch for people into disaster pics.

I remember watching this movie when it aired and it scared the holy crud out of me! Jason Robards character was outstanding!

I live in Kansas and as a Kansan I would have to say this does a pretty good job of getting the reality through to those who live right in the middle of the United States. I actually know people who believe we can't be hit by nukes simply because we live in the middle of the U.S.... read more Anyway, the movie is a very believable nuclear holocaust story. It was a television movie from ABC or something like that and back in the 80's those kinds of movies and miniseries kicked ass. I mean just look at the original V.
Back to The Day After. Pretty good acting, decent effects, lots of build up to the actual bombing. More importantly though, the realism of how most people died. Most didn't die from the actual bombing but from all the radiation that was around afterward. This movie should get a solid 5 but I can't bring myself to give it that. Sorry folks.

When I saw this, I thought I was watching one of those educational videos that I would watch at school, this one being called, "What happens when a nuclear bomb explodes". i didn't learn anything new, and the movie was pretty boring.

Doomsday movie about nuclear politics and war. It's very similar to the BBC nuclear holocaust movie Threads, in attempting to induce end-of-the-world panic, but neither are fully effective; Threads sweeps on by too quickly, while The Day After is a one-note film. For what it's wo... read morerth, The Day After did provoke some genuine scares and terror, depicting a nasty cancerous vision of a radioactive aftermath, but it's a one trick pony, only skilled in showing off local destruction. There's no characterization, no thought put into the plot, and all because - as it reveals at the end - it is a plea for governments to think twice before clicking that "Annihilate" button. The film is still stuck in the 80s and it is slow to start since you have all of this military clandestine lexicon in its first act. Good for what it is, a made-for-TV disaster flick, but bad for its hype.

I was suprised that I liked this movie, because I really don't care for dated movies..like the 70's etc...however this movie was really good and actually scary in a realistic way.

"It is hoped that the images of this film will inspire the nations of this earth, their peoples and their leaders, to find the means to avert the fateful day."

That pretty much defines this movie; it is epically well-made considering the fact that it was made for TV. The make-up... read more, set design, and scenery are so extremely detailed and well done, that despite the "low-budget" vibe this movie gives off, I can safely say it is one of the most horrifying things I have ever watched. It was REALLY uncomfortable for me to watch the last 30 - 40 minutes of this film where everything literally falls apart. VERY provocative, indeed.
