Writer and director Woody Allen returns to the Manhattan of the past with this romantic comedy set in 1940, the era of fedora hats and gumshoe detectives. Allen stars as C.W. Briggs, an insurance inve... read more read more...stigator whose razor-sharp instincts have just led to the successful conclusion of another case, the recovery of a stolen Picasso. While he's a valued employee, Briggs is under fire from efficiency expert Betty Ann Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt) for his antiquated attitudes and refusal to accept modern crime-solving techniques such as fingerprinting. C.W. claims he puts himself directly into the criminal mind, a skill that will do him no good when he and Betty Ann are hypnotized at a Rainbow Room gathering one night by the magician Volton (David Ogden Stiers). As a parlor trick to entertain their co-workers, Volton makes C.W. and Betty Ann believe they're a couple that's deeply in love. But the performer secretly keeps up the ruse after the party's over, calling C.W. to whisper a magic code word and ordering the detective to rob wealthy homes with security systems that C.W. himself has designed. With no memory of his thieving activities, a frustrated C.W. can't solve the high-profile jewel burglaries, while he and Betty Ann struggle with their odd new attraction for each other, made more complicated by the fact that Betty Ann is romantically involved with their boss (Dan Aykroyd). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Bad story and abysmal chemistry curse this luster-less dog.

Despite Woody reportedly having hated this film, I actually kinda liked it. It's entertaining enough, witty enough, jazzy enough, and fun enough to merit a second watch. Even though Woody and Helen Hunt have absolutely zero chemistry together. The ending was quite fun.

Woody Allen's visit to the detective movies of the 30s is full of hilarious and witty dialoges. Especially how his own insurance investigator character battles Helen Hunt's with words and her responses alone are pleasure to watch. The main idea of people committing robberies unde... read morer hypnosis is really fun and Allen manages to entertain in every minute, also thanks to a cast of really good names. The movie is breathing nostalgia for those old days in every minute, it doesn't even try to be more than that. Some might find that unexciting and the lack of a showdown actually is. The humor more than makes up for it. Still fun for as long as it lasts.

Fun and refreshing with so many cute & smart lines, The ending is terrible though
  • June 3, 2008
Not the best Woody Allen. Loved Helen Hunt but her delivery of the long, bitter diatribes got slightly stale. Charlize Theron was surprisingly, devoid of sexuality; her attempt to channel the sophisticated disdain of 1940s Lauren Bacall sounded rushed and self-consciously bored.

Woody is rusted already, he should seriously consider retirement.
  • December 9, 2010
This movie was enjoyable and funny... but not that great .
  • November 5, 2011
This may not be the best Woody Allen, but I enjoyed this romantic comedy set in 1940. The burnished colours and the styling of the female leads are terrific. A pleasure to look at. I would have liked CW not to fall short to Betty Ann--he should be infallible, wittier than she. Fa... read morells a bit short.

A rather mediocre Woody Allen film; most of the acting seems contrived and the pace tends to drag. The one redeeming feature is the dialogue--- there are some genuine laugh out loud moments with the conversations and snappy retorts as usual. The interactions between Hunt, Thero... read moren and Allen just seem to be manufactured and are missing the chemistry Allen had with Keaton. "Manhattan Murder Mystery" is a superiior film.

Dull. One of Woody Allen's lesser films.

The movie has an odd feeling, both lush and listless. It's enough to make us believe Allen's comic batteries need recharging.

The romance between C.W. and Betty Ann doesn't have much ardor, repressed or otherwise. Full Review

Mid-level, pretty-but-not- hugely-funny Allen film.

It's evidently important to Allen to work, work, work, but he's starting to make his movies by rote instead of passion. Full Review

[Allen's] let his guard down and has allowed himself and his audience to relax -- something that doesn't often happen when the specters of class and European art hover over his pictures. Full Review

Despite an appealing, even ingenious premise, Scorpion is another quippy but uninspired comedy.

Many of the jokes fall flat, and the film has a musty smell about it, like an apartment someone has been living in for too long. Yet the picture plays out pleasantly, and Allen creates a world that's ... Full Review

In spite of its dated ways -- or perhaps because of them -- it just may be the most youthful film you'll see this summer. Full Review
