"The Boys in the Band is not a musical" read the film's original advertisements. As Michael and his gay buddies prepare for Harold's arrival, Michael's old college chum Alan (Peter White) makes a surprise appearance. Alan is straight, so Michael tells the revellers to watch their step. Alan's uptight reaction to gay Emory (Cliff Gorman) foments a confrontation. The embittered Michael tries to prove that Alan is a latent homosexual by staging a perverse game in which all the partygoers are required to declare their affections for the persons that they love the most. As it turns out, the person most injured by this game is Michael himself, who is incapable of loving anyone. As the first major-studio production to deal frankly with homosexuality, every member of the show's original Broadway cast appears in the film, including Laurence Luckinbill as an out-of-the-closet husband and father. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Compelling but at times brutally grim drama is a view into the dark night of the soul. Groundbreaking drama based on the off-Broadway play by Mart Crowley, featuring every member of the show's original cast. Michael is throwing a birthday party for his friend Harold. Spellbinding drama directed by William Friedkin. Excellent filmization of Matt Crowley's landmark play about nine men at a birthday party located somewhere in the upper side of New York City. Often hilarious, frequently sad,but always thought provoking, and sensationally acted by the original stage cast. This was one of the greatest movies ever associated within the status of Queer Cimema and one of the top ten Queer movies of all time. Brilliant piece of work on this movie which stars Peter White, Leonard Frey, Cliff Gorman, Laurence Luckinbill, and Keith Prentice. Worth the wait to be finally seen, and not to be missed.

Marvellous drama dealing with the lives of the homosexuals in the big city. It's well adapted tragicomedy.

An instant classic for anyone interested in GLBT cinema. It was fascinating watching how gay men in NYC dealt with life about a year after Stonewall. For me it was more a reflection of the society they lived in that forced some to be so internally homophobic.

People liked it that much? (See popcorn and tomato meters.) It's far from terrible work, but half of the characters are douche bags, and there's a stereotype around every corner, intent on labeling people. Really cheesy lines and plot.

What a great film. The play is even better. It really peels away the layers to get to the all to common human factor.

Wow. It's such a timeless classic, although certain scenes are not politically correct in today's mindset, but never the less, it is well worth watching if you can get your hands on a copy of this gay genre-defining film.

This film is a classic. It is about a group of friends, in the 1970s, who are all gay. It is not a very uplifting film, as it followed the "gay film rules" of the time. You know the ones, that say you can have gay people in the movie, they just have to be miserable or serial ki... read morellers.
