This fourth film dramatization of the 1789 mutiny aboard the H.M.S. Bounty is based not on the familiar Nordhoff and Hall book, but on Richard Hough's novel Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian. This time,... read more read more... the infamous Captain Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) is as strict a disciplinarian as ever. He is, however, no monster; faced with his crew's increasing laxity after an idyllic visit to Tahiti (the search for breadfruit takes second place to limitless sex with the island girls), Bligh is forced to resort to flogging and other such means to keep his men in line. Mr. Christian (Mel Gibson), formerly Bligh's friend, is of little use to the captain, having fallen in love with a native girl himself. Christian becomes the leader of the mutiny virtually in spite of himself; and when the mutineers try to seek refuge on Tahiti, they find that the local chief wants no part of them, which is why they settle for the nearly uninhabitable Pitcairn. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

An interesting take on the mutiny on the bounty. Anthony Hopkins is great as Capt. Bligh, Roger Donaldson's direction is competent but Mel Gibson comes off as an aloof Fletcher Christian. Overall an enjoyable and underrated period piece.

Mom has wanted me to see Mutiny on the Bounty for years. This combination of stars made me willing to give it a try. We watched it together and I was blown away. It's a favorite movie now. There are so many currents of honor and duty and necessity. Wow, I wish they made stuff... read more this good today.

As I've said before how often do casts like these come around? Your two leads (Bligh and Admiral Hood) played by Anthony Hopkins and Sir Laurence Olivier? Are you kidding me??? Forget Mel Gibson, he was so-so as Fletcher Christian (at least they didn't cast Tom Freaking Cruise in... read more that role), notice the supporting cast. Back in 1984 no one had ever heard of Liam Neeson, Daniel Day Lewis and Bernard Hill. Today they represent about 10 Oscar nominations and wins and some of the best roles around (King Theoden anyone?) Add Edward Fox and several other notable actors and you have a cast that can't be beat. Unlike the original 1935 version starring Clark Gable, this adaptation of the famous Mutiny on the Bounty is not only more realistic, but less melodramatic. Director Roger Donaldson does an admirable job of using his phenomenal cast's talents and ensuring all the characters who matter get plenty of screen time. But what i liked the most about this film is it's story structure. You understand why Fletcher did what he did and you understand why Bligh got overthrown. I also enjoyed Donald's decision to portray Bligh (a fantastic turn by Hopkins) as more honorable and more human, unlike the 1935 film. A brilliant film that is highly underrated and highly undershown on TV these days.

I have enjoyed this storyline in other versions in the past. With the top-notch acting in this, it seemed like it couldn't miss. This movie requires a bit of patience for the slower points in the plot, but is not likely to put anyone to sleep. Be aware, there are a lot of brea... read morest shots in the Tahiti scenes--not gratuitous because they are true to the time--but they are surprising in a PG movie.

It's all a brave try, though Gibson is perhaps not up to the demands of a Christian's progress from naive rating to self-loathing exile, and Donaldson's direction often verges on the stolid. Full Review

    • Lt. William Bligh: Mr. Christain, what is it?
    • Fletcher Christian: Oh, it can wait Sir.
    • Lt. William Bligh: What is is damn you.
    • Fletcher Christian: The ship is sinking.
    • Lt. William Bligh: Good.
    • Fryer: But I protest.
    • Lt. William Bligh: You protest, do you?
    • Fryer: I am Master of The Bounty.
    • Lt. William Bligh: And I am Commander, by law! I am the first. Do you understand? God damn your hide, and now you may dismiss, sir!
    • Churchill: William, about your decision to go around the Horn.
    • Lt. William Bligh: William? Not sir? Not captain? William.
    • Churchill: I don't think the men will have it.
    • Lt. William Bligh: Oh, the men won't have it. Are they in charge of the Bounty?
    • Churchill: They might be if you insist.
    • Lt. William Bligh: Again. Will you repeat that, please?
    • Churchill: The men might be in charge.
    • Lt. William Bligh: What are you threatening me with?
    • Churchill: It's not a threat, it's a warning.
    • Lt. William Bligh: Well, gentlemen, between ourselves and home are 27,000 sea miles, the Endeavour Straits and the Great Barrier Reef. Now the crew is deeply demoralised, gentlemen, and I must accept, as every captain must accept, the inevitable and theoretical responsibilty for that. The actual and immediate responsibilty, however, I place on you, my fellow officers, who met this crisis with lethargy, impudence and flagrant defiance publicly uttered. And perhaps also for that, I am to blame. I counted on a strength of character which you do not possess. However, the cure for our predicament is discipline. And I shall apply it with an even hand, of course, but most where it is most required. Yes, well that will be all. Thank you. You may leave now.
