Insane Dr. Lizado and his alien allies try to steal the secret of eighth dimensional travel from neurosurgeon/secret agent Buckaroo Banzai and his band of rock and roll scientists. It's pleasantly campy and crazy and features some great throwaway lines; the one problem is that st... read more

This is a wacky sci-fi adventure comedy movie that's so strange you're not sure what genre it really belongs to or why they made the movie in the first place. It stars a lot of good actors, and they do an alright job, but the story is confusing and like I said, very odd. Overal... read more

This movie definitely falls into the cult film category. Definitely hit or miss, but I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Give it a shot.

Not the classic I was expecting. I spent much of the time trying to figure out who was who and what was going on. I still enjoyed it, nonetheless.

This movie tried to be so many things, with it's shocking assortment of characters and weird aliens. I couldn't get into much of it. Some hilights include the night club scene when Buckaroo first meets Penny, and the famous end credit sequence with driving music and an awesome pa... read more

Bizarre sci-fi/action/comedy that's got a tremendous cast but no structure or cohesive narrative to speak of. Self-conciously surreal, but never funny and has no drama to speak of as the script writer seems to have just been making it up as he went. Odd indeed.

Bizarre, ridiculous film just gets better with age. Well ahead of it's time and still underappreciated.

Oddest good movie with the polymath hero in this action-packed adventure in an outlandish world. Half of the movie seems to have been left on the cutting-room floor; the wrong half judging by what's left.

I didn't get this. It wasn't as fun as the posters and video case label and hype make it sound.
Critic Reviews
It violates every rule of storytelling and narrative structure in creating a self-contained world of its own. Full Review
The film gives you the mildly annoying sensation of being left out of a not very good private joke. Full Review
Buckaroo Banzai may well turn out to be a pilot film for other theatrical features, though this one would be hard to top for pure, nutty fun. Full Review
Off-the-wall and incoherent but colorful and eccentric, this satire, benefiting from a great cast, became a cult item. Full Review
It's a whole lot of thought put into a movie in which not very much happens. Full Review
Buckaroo Banzai is like decades of escapist pulp filtered through the skeptic's shrug of the mid-'80s. Full Review
Richter's comic genre hybrid comes complete with its own mythology, and team of established superheroes, and is curiously appealing. Full Review
Punch lines appear without set-ups and set-ups without punch lines. Characters come and go with such bewildering speed that it is virtually impossible to keep track of the story, which jumps around en... Full Review
