Shirley MacLaine plays Charity Hope Valentine who, despite her job at a seedy dime-a-dance joint, is an incurable optimist. Charity never stops looking for true love and never seems to look for it in ... read more read more...the right places. We first see her in the company of Charlie (Dante DiPaolo), a slimeball who steals her purse and pushes her into the Central Park pond. Next she stumbles into a one-night stand with Vittorio Vidal (Ricardo Montalban), an egotistical movie star; this comes to nothing when Vittorio's contrite girlfriend Ursula (Barbara Bouchet) comes calling, forcing Charity to spend the night hiding in the closet. Desperate to escape the dance hall, Charity heads to an employment agency, where a bureaucratic clerk (Alan Hewitt) informs her that she has no qualifications. Unhappily, Charity heads for the elevator, where she becomes trapped with the very shy -- and very claustrophobic -- Oscar Lindquist (John McMartin). Once they've gotten out of the stalled elevator, Charity begins dating Oscar, never telling him of her checkered past or her sordid dance-hall job. Oscar eventually finds out but assures her that it doesn't matter. However, at the engagement party held at the dance hall, Oscar's puritanical streak emerges. He walks out on Charity, leaving her alone and heartbroken once more. With the help of a group of flower children (among them Bud Cort and Kristoffer Tabori), Charity is able to pick herself up and start living "Hopefully Ever After." Sweet Charity was adapted from the 1965 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the 1957 Fellini flick Nights of Cabiria. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The music is great, and the dancing is fantastic (whatelse for Bob Fosse!) but the story...meh...I dont I think it was just the ending...Shirley Maclaine isnt bad, But this movie did get pretty long. Buy the soundtrack, watch the dances on YouTube and save a couple of hours.

It's no All that Jazz or Cabaret, but still very enjoyable. Fosse's experimentation with style is really interesting, but occasionally distracting.

I dislike most garish musicals and Fosse thrives on them. Sometimes I think Shirley Maclaine is adorable but most of the time I found her really annoying. "Hey Big Spender" is a solid Fosse number but I have seen better and it is really is too long. The entire movie is too long.

I was looking forward to this and I give it 2 stars for Shirley MacLaine but it didn't come off well as a movie and I hated how badly dubbed the musical numbers were. If they remade this now, I would be very happy. There is a lot of potential here.

Yes, it's very dated, yes, it's a touch overlong, but it's still very entertaining. There are some great musical numbers, with incredible choreography by Bob Fosse, especially 'Rich Man's Frug'. The scenes between the songs however did seem to drag on at times.

"Iffff t-h-e-y could see me now....That Ol' Gang of Mine, Eatin Fancy Chow & Drinkin Fancy Wine......." one of the best Song & Dance Numbers in Show Biz, & with a Top Hat & Cane!Bob Fosse Dance Numbers!!! Did you hear me?

I loved this movie. Shirley MacLaine is edible (as always) and Bob Fosse continually spices up the narrative with fun innovation. The love story was beautifully genuine and the musical numbers were a whole lot of fun. The only flaw was that it ran a bit long. Some of the numb... read moreers could have been shortened or cut out entirely. But it's definitely a clear forerunner to Cabaret, exploring nearly all the same themes and utilizing similar framing and choreography. Cabaret is undoubtedly superior, but Sweet Charity is quite the hidden gem.

Bob Fosse is a genius. The movie is dated and could use a little updating( I refer to the stills and the intermission).

The first I knew of Shirley MacLaine was the crazy psychic nut from the 80s. I always dismissed her and her films. I'm glad I caught this movie and discovered how wrong I was ever about her. She is an incredibly personable actress who can be as funny as all get out.

This movie borders on being really bad and really forgettable. Until... Hey Big Spender and The Rich Man's Frug sequences. Those two sequences alone save this movie and actually make it Well Worth Watching. Bob Fosse at his best on the choreography here.
