Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Jackie Cooper, Marc McClure, Mariel Hemingway

Superman (Christopher Reeve) tries to save the world from nuclear destruction at the hands of Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) in this action film featuring the man of steel. In a speech to the United Nation... read more read more...s, Superman declares he will rid the world of all nuclear weapons. Arch-villain Luthor emerges from prison obsessed with killing Superman and creates an adversary known as Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two engage in a fight to the finish in various landmarks on Earth before taking their battle into outer space. When Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) invites both Superman and Clark Kent to a double-date dinner, Superman's powers are tested so that both men can be present. Jackie Cooper plays the gruff veteran newspaper editor Perry White, with Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen. Sam Wanamaker plays tabloid tycoon David Warfield, the millionaire who buys the Daily Planet. Mariel Hemmingway is Warfield's daughter Lacy, Clark Kent's date at Lois' luxury apartment. This is the least interesting of the four Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This last Superman movie has a very obvious sub-plot about nuclear war, and it's also very cheesy. It's not as bad as the third one, but it's still not a great superhero movie. Overall, it's okay.

While it does have one of the craziest villians of all time, Nuclear Man, it is not enough to make this movie worthwhile. The plot is laughable and the acting is atrocious. It was a tad better than part III, but still a disaster and horrible conclusion to the series. While it's g... read morereat seeing Gene Hackman back as Lex Luthor and finding new ways to destroy Superman, the series should have ended a long time ago.

"Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace" is without a doubt my least favorite of the four Superman movies. This last time around, Superman (Christopher Reeve) has a plan to put an end to nuclear war altogether by getting rid of all the world's nuclear weapons. But it won't be as easy a... read mores the Man of Steel makes it sound because Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) has his own plan of making and selling nuclear weapons in order to get rich. And on top of that, Lex Luthor has made a new being that just might give Superman a challenge as to who's the strongest. This new being gets his power from the sun and is called Nuclear Man.
In "Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace," Superman does do some terrific feats such as rescue the Statue of Liberty, rescue an astronaut in outer space, and even visit the USA flag on the moon, but it's just not the same Superman. "Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace" has the worst special effects and also the worst plot of any of the Superman movies. The excitement and sense of wonder that were in the previous 3 movies just isn't here in this movie.

"Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace" is an alright movie, but not great by any means. I recommend anybody who likes the other Superman movies to rent this one, but I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you're a Superman fanatic and you absolutely have to have it. NOTE: That was my Amazon review from the year 2001.

Did you see Superman III? If you thought that movie was terrible then just wait until you see Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. You'll believe a man can fly in front of a blue screen with shoddy special effects work and a script that should have been used to wipe someone's ass.

Superman IV is a shake your finger tale about the dangers of nuclear holocaust. This isn't Dr. Strangelove kids, that movie was actually good. This is a huge heaping pile of mess that can't even be saved by the return of Gene Hackman. Why in the hell did Gene Hackman do this piece of dung!? The same reason Michael Caine did Jaws: The Revenge: Cash. This is the film where we learn that kryptonite and a well manicured set of nuclear fingernails can destroy Superman and that he can lay bricks with his own eyes and apparently Mariel Hemingway is super human and can function in space sans suit.

This is a film where one star doesn't say how utterly terrible it is. I want a steaming turd icon for this film. It's no wonder it took 20 years to do another one. With lines like "He'll be alright, he needs a doctor." Superman IV ranks right up there as one of the greatest craptraps ever created.

Don't be put off by the shoddy visual effects. Enjoy it for the entertainment value.

Terrible! SFX were hopelessly bad. Who wrote the script? Shoot them please!

Superman IV didn't do much for anybody. There's an anti-war message, bad special effects, an over-the-top laughable super villain, a political Superman, childish opening credits, lack of heroic rescues, an absence of Lois Lane and Lanna Lang - what did they expect when they slapp... read moreed this thing together? I would gladly watch "Supergirl" over this thing.
