A confident teen rowing team faces an unexpected challenge -- both in and out of the water -- in this coming-of-age comedy drama. Summer Storm primarily concerns the angsty Tobi (Robert Stadlober), a ... read more read more...high-school oarsman whose finds his intimate friendship with charismatic teammate Achim (Kostja Ullmann) threatened as Achim gets more serious with his girlfriend. Tobi's situation is complicated when he and the boys leave for rowing camp for the summer: there, the headstrong team is introduced to The Queerstrokes, a champion team of out-and-proud gay teen athletes. Some of the boys are fine with their new opponents, some are blatantly homophobic, and others -- Tobi included -- find their already shaky notions of heterosexuality threatened. Tensions rise in the days building up to the big competition, and Tobi struggles to come to terms with what his true desires are. Summer Storm had its North American premiere at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

    Irritatingly simple-minded gay coming-of-age story.

This sweet gay German film has some great music and some really tender moments.

I hate romance movies. BUT I love gay romance. I have no idea why and so in July of 2008 I just watched a lot of gay romance movies because they are so damn awesome. They are the only kind of romance movies in which I want the characters to get together. So anyway, although the m... read moreain guy was ugly and looked like Brad Greenquist (Pascal from Pet Sematary) I still enjoyed it. For some reason in every gay movie I watched one of the guys would be extremely ugly and the other... not. Um... so it was kind of funny and ok, but I wanted Tobi and Achim to get together (like I said I always want happy endings in gay romance and unhappy endings in hetero romance, and I'm a straight female... go figure).

    Great movie! Great music.

    Wonderful coming-of-age film.

This was a really good coming-of-age story with its confusions, crushes, and heartaches but with touches of humor as well. The ending was also good, no tragedy here.

Coming of age and out of a young teen boy who is going to a camp for a rowing competition. Who is the competition, none other than an all gay rowing team. Nice enough story and acting.

I rowed for five years in high school, and was on the rowing team when I came out of the closet at seventeen. That being said, when I heard about this movie, I felt an obligation to see it. That being said, I never had a crush on a straight best friend (at least not to the extent... read more Tobi had with Achim). I found it difficult to watch some of the more uncomfortable and awkward moments, because they brought back some memories I don't care to often think about. There's some really strong characters in this movie, and the story played out well (at times somewhat cliche). I would have liked to see a bit more on the rowing aspect, have that tied into the meaning of the plot. Why choose rowing and not really use it aside from having it be the one thing everyone has in common. Maybe it's the American "I-Must-Win-Everything' gene that I've got embedded in me, but I took rowing a hell of a lot more seriously than these kids. My whole team did. I just thought that the sport, and the teamwork involved, could have been tied into the theme a bit better. Had a positive ending, and is an overall good film.

It was an excelent comming out film. The interaction with his straight friend really lent it a lot more credibility than many of the others I've seen, and more importantly, it was believable.

Great film. Has some visually brilliant shots and awsomely moving scenes. A great tale of two best friends both struggleing with growing up and becoming the people we are meant to be.

Its coming-of-age yarn goes nowhere beyond inevitably out of a closet. Full Review

It's sunny and frothy, with odd laugh-out-loud moments. Full Review

This gay coming-of-age film from Germany ultimately has few original aspects, but it is an intelligently wrought drama that makes it a respectable entry in the genre.

While it has little in it that hasn't been covered by other coming-out movies, it's pleasant enough. Full Review

Kreutzpainter limns his multifarious characters with an amiable, unforced humor and an authentic feel for the ways in which good kids respond to peer pressure with less-than-admirable behavior. Full Review

Equal parts earnest and endearing, Bavarian director Marco Kreuzpaintner's gay romance tackles its adolescent heartaches with unusual compassion. Full Review

The slo-mo opening, accompanied by sappy music, tells you everything you need to know about Summer Storm, an uninspired gay coming-of-age import from Germany.

Summer Storm is another of those soft-core, simple-minded stories about a geeky young gay man (Robert Stadlober as Tobi) struggling with his sexuality over the course of a long, hot, sexed-up summer. Full Review

Summer Storm is a contemporary teen summer romance with a modern sexual twist -- though in many ways, it's just the same old malarkey. Full Review
